The International Labour Organization (ILO) is the UN agency with responsibility for the world of work.
AIDS is a workplace issue not only because the virus affects labour and productivity, but also because the workplace has a vital role to play in the wider response to limit the spread and effects of the epidemic.
As a Cosponsor of UNAIDS, and under the UNAIDS division of labour, ILO is the lead agency on HIV workplace policy and private sector mobilization. Because of its tripartite structure, it can mobilize the networks and contacts of governments, employers and workers in 183 countries. The ILO has direct access to the workplace, where action can be taken for prevention and care. It has long experience in protecting the rights of workers, opposing discrimination, and improving occupational safety and health.
The ILO also has global network of field offices, experience in technical cooperation, and capacity for research and information dissemination.

International labour standard on HIV
The international labour standard on HIV/AIDS and the world of work was adopted by Member States at the 99th session of the ILC in June 2010. It includes a series of proposals with regard to HIV and the world of work.
