The distinctive mix of competencies in education, natural, social and human sciences, culture, communication and information give the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) a unique organizational and technical capacity in responding to the achievement of universal access to comprehensive HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. UNESCO supports comprehensive and scaled-up education sector engagement as part of stronger national responses to AIDS, particularly with regard to HIV prevention with young people.
Its leadership of EDUCAIDS (the UNAIDS Global Initiative on Education and HIV and AIDS), coordination of the UNAIDS Inter-Agency Task Team (IATT) on Education, support for good-quality sexuality education and co-convenor of the priority area of empowering young people to prevent HIV in the UNAIDS Outcome Framework are key initiatives supporting strengthened strategic partnerships and cooperation among ministries of education, UNAIDS cosponsors, bilateral agencies and civil society groups at global, regional and country levels.
