World Bank opens free access to development data

In an unprecedented move, the World Bank has made its extensive store of developmental data available to all free of charge. From now on more than two thousand health, economic, human development, financial and business statistics will be accessible via a new website, data.worldbank.org.

Taking HIV prevention on the road

For many in West Africa, the road network is a vital socio-economic lifeline but it can also be a way for the spread of HIV. An ambitious programme, the World Bank Abidjan-Lagos Transport Corridor (ALCO) project, has seen marked success in helping people living and working along this highway to reduce their vulnerability to HIV.

Social protection: helping families affected by HIV weather the financial crisis

As leaders convene at the G20 summit in Pittsburgh, the Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS campaign, spearheaded by UNICEF and supported by UNAIDS among other partners, is encouraging a discussion on the role of social protection. The campaign believes that developing a network of public and private services, addressing vulnerability, poverty and exclusion, can help protect children and families affected by AIDS.

The route to good living: World Bank guide to HIV prevention in Africa’s transport sector

Transport corridors in sub-Saharan Africa, as elsewhere, enable movement of people and goods, increasing economic activity and spreading wealth. But they also facilitate the spread of HIV. In response, the Africa Transport Sector of the World Bank has published a practical new booklet on how to implement HIV prevention activities as part of road construction projects.
Global economic crisis and HIV

A joint Word Bank/UNAIDS report looks at the potential impact of the global financial crisis on HIV prevention and treatment programmes worldwide. Using data collected in March 2009 from 71 countries, the analysis looks at how the crisis could affect people living with HIV needing treatment. The potential effects on prevention activities were also investigated.

Funding for AIDS drugs in jeopardy as global financial crisis hits health sector

A new report from the World Bank reports preliminary findings from a survey in 69 countries conducted by the World Bank, UNAIDS and the World Health Organization showing that respondents in 22 countries in Africa, the Caribbean, Europe and Central Asia, and Asia and Pacific expect the economic crisis to impact HIV treatment programmes over the coming year.

UNAIDS, donors and civil society, including networks of people living with HIV, have rightly demanded greater clarity on the relationships between needs, financing, activities and outcomes. Also demanded is greater specificity about the role of UNAIDS and the Secretariat within the wider constellation of actors.
