HIV prevention and protection for women and girls cannot wait

HIV is recognized as the leading cause of deaths among women of reproductive age. To discuss this issue, a policy forum was held to identify and strengthen the response to women, girls and HIV on the sidelines of the 2011 UN General Assembly High Level Meeting on AIDS on 8 June.

China Central Television has named CCTV News Anchor and National UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador James Chau its International Journalist of the Year. The prize was given for his coverage of the 2010 Manila Hostage Crisis, and in recognition of the awareness his reporting brings to the rights of HIV-positive people.

Annie Lennox, international singer and UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador, has been awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE), an honour conferred by Queen Elizabeth II. The announcement was made on 31 December as part of the 2011 New Year Honours list.

With open arms, Austria has welcomed an estimated 20,000 delegates from all over the world who will spend the next week taking part in conference sessions and satellite meetings under the theme “Rights Here, Right Now” selected to emphasize the critical connection between human rights and HIV.

'Give AIDS the Red Card' web competition closes

With the ending of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, the UNAIDS web contest has come to a close as well. Contestants joined the UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassadors footballers Michael Ballack and Emmanuel Adebayor in the ‘Give AIDS the Red Card’ web competition to learn about HIV and win prizes. The contest engaged hundreds of participants from all corners of the world. Respondents’ thoughtful ideas for a solution to stopping stigma and discrimination were particularly enlightening and promising.

Every 4 years, the world turns its eyes to the football World Cup, the biggest sporting tournament on the planet. This year, the World Cup is being held in South Africa with many top teams and stars taking part. As in years past, UNAIDS will be hosting a web-competition, under the slogan “Give AIDS the Red Card” in order to celebrate the games. With the help of UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassadors Michael Ballack and Emmanuel Adebayor, the “Give AIDS the Red Card” campaign leads us in the direction of preventing and ending mother-to-child transmission of HIV by the year 2015.

Women Deliver conference focuses on MDG 5

With maternal and reproductive health as a global priority, a three-day conference, Women Deliver 2010, has kicked off in Washington DC under the theme "Invest in women. It pays." The event’s main focus is to highlight that the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) will not be achieved without investing in women and that there is just enough time, if the world commits funding now, to achieve the MDG’s fifth goal of improving maternal health.
