- Religious summit engages religious leaders in the HIV response
- The first-ever Summit of High Level Religious Leaders on the Response to HIV is taking place in The Netherlands from 22 to 23 March. The meeting will explore opportunities for religious leaders to promote universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support in their communities and speak out against stigma and discrimination affecting people living with HIV.
- Universal access in the Caribbean must include men who have sex with men
- Although the Caribbean as a region has the second highest HIV prevalence after sub-Saharan Africa, most countries have concentrated epidemics which disproportionately affect certain groups including gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM). In many countries men who have sex with men experience considerable social stigma and are not reached with vital HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services. Not only are men afraid of disclosing their sexual activity, they are also deterred from finding out what they need to know to reduce their risk or to buy condoms.
- Call for urgent action to improve coverage of HIV services for injecting drug users
- The fifty-third session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND)—the central policy-making body of the United Nations in drug related matters—is running in Vienna until 12 March 2010. A new report by the Reference Group to the UN system on HIV and Injecting Drug Use shows that the coverage of effective interventions remains far short of what is needed.

- AIDS is not over in any part of the world and country driven goals towards universal access need to remain a priority. This was a recurrent message told by more than 40 champions and leaders of the AIDS response who gathered for a meeting at the House of Lords organised by United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID).
- Regional body adopts programme of joint action on HIV for Commonwealth of Independent States
- An estimated 1.5 million adults and children are living with HIV in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. With an adult HIV prevalence of 1.6% in 2007, Ukraine has the largest prevalence in all of Europe. Estonia, Russian Federation and Ukraine all have HIV prevalence that exceeds 1%.
- South Africa committed to achieving universal access
- South Africa is transforming its AIDS response. Today, the Deputy President of South Africa HE Mr Kgalema Motlanthe met with Executive Directors of UNAIDS and Global Fund in Johannesburg. He recommitted his government’s commitment to meet their universal access targets.
- Handbook on HIV for Parliamentarians developed in Cambodia
- Political commitment at the highest level is recognized as a critical factor in Cambodia’s success in creating a supportive legislative and policy environment for the national response to HIV. With support from the National AIDS Authority, the UNDP Legislature Assistance Project of the National Assembly, , Family Health International USAID funded Prasit Project and UNAIDS, a Parliamentary Handbook on HIV has been developed.
- Nigeria to accelerate universal access efforts in HIV response
- There are nearly three million people living with HIV in Nigeria. After South Africa, the country has the largest number of people living with HIV in the continent. Each day there are about 1000 new infections. National HIV prevalence is around 4.6%. But these figures mask the multiple epidemics in the various states of the country. Many of the people living with HIV are poor. Add to this stigma and discrimination.

- Ahead of the UN High-level Meeting on Millennium Development Goals, UNAIDS calls on all countries to review progress and barriers for achieving national targets for universal access.
- Removing bottle-necks for Universal Access in Central African Republic
- The Central African Republic, one of the poorest countries in the world, has been heavily affected by the HIV epidemic. It is estimated that 160 000 people are living with HIV in the country, and only one in four of those in need have access to Anti-Retroviral Treatment (ART).

- In a supplement of the Journal of AIDS’ December issue published yesterday, UNAIDS explores some of the current challenges to monitoring the progress towards global HIV targets. It explores thematic, technical analysis of data and key findings derived from the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on HIV/AIDS (UNGASS) reporting system.
- Going beyond social taboos: Parliamentarians begin inclusive dialogue with key groups in Pakistan
- In a move to counter social exclusion and change discriminatory practices, a dialogue has begun in Pakistan between the government, parliamentarians and communities often overlooked by policymakers. An historic meeting was held late last month when a number of parliamentarians began a dialogue with community members on the challenges facing transgendered people, people who use drugs and people living with HIV. This meeting was a first, and aimed to create an enabling environment for policy changes related to HIV.
- Eastern Europe and Central Asia HIV conference for joint efforts towards Universal Access
- The 3rd HIV/AIDS Conference in Eastern Europe and Central Asia opened in Moscow today with a ceremony attended by senior representatives of Russian Duma, Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Russian Academy of Sciences and the US Ambassador to the Russian Federation. Participants and organizers hope it will invigorate the regional response to the AIDS epidemic.
- Governments and civil society expand access to HIV testing and counselling
- A brightly coloured van known as the ‘Tutu Tester’ has become a familiar sight in Cape Town, South Africa, as part of an accelerating drive to persuade people to know their HIV status. More than 10 000 people have been tested and counselled since May 2008 when the mobile clinic from the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation took to the road.
- More infants protected from HIV as access to antiretroviral drugs to prevent mother-to-child transmission increases
- Despair is giving way to cautious optimism even in the most HIV-affected African nations as antiretroviral drugs become more widely available to stop HIV-positive women from infecting their unborn child or infant, thus edging closer to United Nations targets for an HIV-free generation of children.
- Michel Sidibé presents UNAIDS’ vision in Washington, D.C.
- The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Global Health Policy Center invited the UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé to share his vision for the future direction of UNAIDS, including prospects for accelerated global action in support of universal access to HIV services.
- Revitalizing community mobilization for universal access in West and Central Africa
- Thirty civil society organizations involved in the HIV response in West and Central Africa (WCA) identified six priority areas for action to accelerate the movement towards universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support in the region. This decision was the outcome of a regional consultation organized by the UNAIDS Regional Support Team, in collaboration with three regional civil society networks (AfriCASO, International HIV/AIDS Alliance, ENDA Santé) in Dakar from 11 to 14 August 2009.
- Dialogue on Universal Access Report 2009 released
- When the Executive Director of UNAIDS took office he called for a renewed commitment to universal access. From January to May 2009, a transition team led by Norwegian AIDS Ambassador Sigrun Mogedal engaged in a process of consultations and dialogue with key partners and stakeholders in the HIV response to obtain insight on where UNAIDS should focus its efforts in helping countries achieve universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support.

- The High-Level Forum on Advancing Global Health in the Face of Crisis is taking place at United Nations Headquarters on Monday, 15 June 2009. The Secretary-General is hosting the day long forum in order to elevate the global health debate and engage multisectoral representatives from around the world.
- Communities reclaiming their role in universal access to HIV services
- Leonard is the father of five daughters, one of whom, recently turned 14, was born HIV positive. In addition to juggling with the responsibility of raising a family of girls, Leonard is becoming very concerned about the new challenges he’s facing with having a positive teenage girl at home. “She is growing and as a father, I must help her grow into a mature and responsible woman. How should I talk to her about sex given her HIV positive status without instilling a sense of guilt? I do not find the guidance to help me respond to her needs,” he said.
