The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon brought together his team of United Nations Special Envoys for AIDS to discuss their strategic directions for the year ahead. UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé also participated in the meeting that took place on 07 January at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Dr Nafis Sadik: A decade as UN Special Envoy for AIDS in Asia and the Pacific

Dr Nafis Sadik, a national of Pakistan, was appointed Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for AIDS in Asia and the Pacific in 2002. In ten years as Special Envoy, she has travelled extensively across the region to promote key issues and advocate for an expanded, multisectoral response to HIV in Asia and the Pacific at the highest levels.

Activists, academics and HIV programme implementers met in Busan, South Korea at the 10th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP 10) to explore and debate the political complexities of HIV responses. The event, entitled ‘Political Sciences and the Politics of HIV in Asia and the Pacific,’ shed light on the often highly political nature of responses to the epidemic.
HIV and conflict: Connections and the need for universal access

A special supplement on HIV has been published by the journal Forced Migration Review in which a UNAIDS paper highlights the need for universal access to HIV services. The edition is based on the work of the AIDS, Security and Conflict Initiative which undertook research over a number of years to gather evidence and advance analysis on the connections between HIV and conflict.

Greater action needed to protect women’s inheritance and property rights in the face of HIV

If more women are to avoid HIV infection, laws on inheritance and property rights should be revisited, revised or better enforced. This was one of the key messages emerging from a high-profile side-event on women’s inheritance, land and housing rights in the context of HIV, which took place yesterday, 12 March, during the 53rd session of the Commission on the Status of Women held at UN Headquarters in New York.

Caribbean faith leaders respond to AIDS

The two-day forum, held in Barbados, brought together more than 130 religious leaders in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean to discuss inclusion and human sexuality in the context of AIDS. Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan: a window of opportunity

Amidst growing epidemics in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan have managed maintain relatively low levels of HIV prevalence. During a recent visit to the region the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy on HIV/AIDS in Asia and the Pacific Dr. Nafis Sadik congratulated the two countries on their work to reduce the spread of the disease and encouraged them to step-up their efforts on prevention.
