Ms Jan Beagle, Deputy Executive Director, Management and External Relations

Ms Jan Beagle joined UNAIDS as Deputy Executive Director, Management and External Relations, in September 2009.

She leads UNAIDS’ work in forging partnerships, increasing advocacy outreach, mobilizing resources and bringing together Governments, civil society, the private sector, international and regional organizations, and other partners to create opportunities and solutions to the challenges facing the AIDS response. She also provides strategic direction to overarching management functions - in the areas of human resources, finance, budget, information technology and administration - to enhance UNAIDS’ capacity to implement its mandate and vision. She represents the organization in many interagency bodies, including as Vice-Chair of the High Level Committee on Management and convener of the UNDG Working Group on Resident Coordinator issues.

Ms Beagle brings to this position more than 30 years of experience in the political, development, management and interagency areas of the United Nations work, as well as extensive experience in change management.

Most recently Ms Beagle served as Deputy Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, where she introduced improvements in systems and practices to strengthen management and promote system-wide coherence. Previously, as Assistant Secretary-General for Human Resources Management in the United Nations, she had responsibility for the development and implementation of organizational human resources policies and programmes covering more than 30,000 staff globally. In this capacity, she led the development of the comprehensive human resources management reform strategy “Investing in People”.

Ms Beagle has also served in senior positions in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General, the Office of the Administrator of UNDP, the Office of the Under-Secretary-General for Management, and the Department of Political and Security Council Affairs. In all these positions, she has been involved in numerous change management initiatives at the level of the United Nations Secretariat and the United Nations system.

Prior to joining the United Nations, Ms Beagle served in her country’s diplomatic service, including five years as a delegate to the United Nations. She has a masters degree with first class honours from the University of Auckland, New Zealand. She is married and has three daughters.
