The office of Cosponsor Relations and Governance manages and supports the work of UNAIDS guiding body, the Programme Coordinating Board as well as other governance mechanisms such as the Committee of Cosponsoring Organization and reporting to UNAIDS’s parent bodies ECOSOC and the UN General Assembly. It also manages relations with the principal organs of the United Nations, Member States, the Joint Programme’s ten Cosponsors, civil society partners and other key actors.
General Assembly of the United Nations
Through a series of goals, resolutions and declarations adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations, the world has a set of commitments, actions and goals to stop and reverse the spread of HIV and scale up towards universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services.
UNAIDS Governance Handbook
The The Governance Handbook is collection of key documents pertaining to the governance of UNAIDS including the founding ECOSOC resolutions, Memoranda of Understanding between the Secretariat and Cosponsoring organizations, and key Political Declarations related to HIV.
Millennium Development Goals
In 2000, the largest gathering of world leaders at United Nations Headquarters in New York adopted the United Nations Millennium Declaration. Goal 6 of the Millennium Development Goals sets out by 2015 to have halted and begun to reverse the spread of HIV. More
UNAIDS Cosponsors
UNAIDS brings together the efforts and resources of ten UN system organizations: UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP, UNDP, UNFPA, UNODC, ILO, UNESCO, WHO, and the World Bank. More
UN Security Council Resolution 1308
In 2000 the UN Security Council for the first time debated a health issue—AIDS. Resolution 1308 highlights the AIDS and emergency situations and potential damaging impact of HIV on the health of international peacekeeping personnel. More
Second Independent Evaluation of UNAIDS
The Second Independent Evaluation (SIE) was commissioned by the UNAIDS PCB in 2007 to: “Assess the efficacy, effectiveness and outcomes of UNAIDS (including the UNAIDS Secretariat, the PCB and the Cosponsors) at global, regional and country levels.”
ECOSOC
The United Nations Economic and Social council (ECOSOC) was established under the United Nations Charter as the principal organ to coordinate economic, social, and related work of the 14 UN specialized agencies, functional commissions and five regional commissions.
