Mr Joel Rehnstrom, Director, Financial Management and Accountability Department

Mr Joel Rehnstrom joined UNAIDS in 1998 and was appointed Director of the Financial Management and Accountability department in December of 2009.

Mr Rehnstrom’s career at UNAIDS has primarily focused on planning, budgeting, monitoring and evaluation based at the Geneva headquarters. From 2003 to 2007 Mr Rehnstrom served as UNAIDS Country Coordinator in China, where he supported the development of a joint UN programme on AIDS, new legislation, a national action plan, a monitoring and evaluation framework on AIDS as well as ensured greater involvement of people living with HIV, non-governmental organizations, foundations and the private sector in the response to AIDS.

Prior to joining UNAIDS, Mr Rehnstrom served as Programme Officer with UNICEF in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bhutan, Assistant Resident Representative with UNDP in Yemen, and Evaluation Specialist with the UN Volunteers as well as WHO in Geneva.

In the role as Director for financial management and accountably, Mr Rehnstrom is responsible for ensuring the integrity of UNAIDS resource planning and management and coordinating efforts to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of operations.

Mr Rehnstrom holds a Ph.D. in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He also holds a Master’s and Bachelor of Arts degree from Abo Akademi University in Finland where he is from.
