China Central Television names news anchor and National UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador James Chau its International Journalist of the Year

China Central Television has named CCTV News Anchor and National UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador James Chau its International Journalist of the Year. The prize was given for his coverage of the 2010 Manila Hostage Crisis, and in recognition of the awareness his reporting brings to the rights of HIV-positive people.
UNAIDS congratulates Annie Lennox on receiving the Order of the British Empire

Annie Lennox, international singer and UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador, has been awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE), an honour conferred by Queen Elizabeth II. The announcement was made on 31 December as part of the 2011 New Year Honours list.

Commemorating World AIDS Day 2010, lights on landmarks all over the world—from New York to Paris and from Ethiopia to Thailand—will be turned off Wednesday, December 1, during more than 100 events to remember those lost to AIDS. Those same lights will then be turned back on to emphasize the importance of human rights for people living with HIV and people at risk of infection.

HIV and conflict: Connections and the need for universal access

A special supplement on HIV has been published by the journal Forced Migration Review in which a UNAIDS paper highlights the need for universal access to HIV services. The edition is based on the work of the AIDS, Security and Conflict Initiative which undertook research over a number of years to gather evidence and advance analysis on the connections between HIV and conflict.
UNAIDS convenes consultation on sport for global advocacy

Sport has a special ability to unify and galvanize people all over the world and therefore is a powerful vehicle for advocacy at the global down to the community level. In light of the potential of sports for AIDS advocacy, UNAIDS organized a consultation with representatives of several sports organizations and other experts from 24-26 October in Geneva to examine current initiatives and ideas for future activities.

Use light to highlight rights this World AIDS Day

The first Light for Rights event was held on 1 December 2009 in New York. This year, the campaign aims to encourage 100 cities around the world to dim the lights on public landmarks to remember the devastating affect AIDS has had, and to turn the lights back on to illuminate the fundamental human rights shared by all but often denied people living with HIV.

A new exhibition featuring images representing Russia’s HIV epidemic opened on 21 September at Moscow State University. The international news agency Reuters and the UNAIDS Regional Support Team for Eastern Europe and Central Asia partnered to display 35 of Reuters’ most compelling photographs.
