New campaign to help prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV in Lesotho

Malekena George, from Lesotho’s Berea district, is eight months pregnant and living with HIV. The Lesotho Ministry of Health, with help from UNICEF and other partners, is working to ensure that her second baby is not born with HIV.

UNDP to partner with Sony and JICA in Cameroon and Ghana during FIFA World Cup

Sony Corporation is partnering with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to bring health information, with a special focus on HIV, to vulnerable communities in Cameroon and Ghana.

Taking HIV prevention on the road

For many in West Africa, the road network is a vital socio-economic lifeline but it can also be a way for the spread of HIV. An ambitious programme, the World Bank Abidjan-Lagos Transport Corridor (ALCO) project, has seen marked success in helping people living and working along this highway to reduce their vulnerability to HIV.

Vancouver Winter Games will strengthen UN-Olympic collaboration

The 2010 Olympic Winter Games will kick off tomorrow night in Vancouver, marking the start of 16 days of intense competitions and celebrations, including a series of events where the United Nations family will celebrate its growing bonds with the Olympic family. Te IOC and UNAIS has a long-standing partnership and for the Vancouver Games have developed a toolkit on HIV for athletes participating.

Brazil post offices join Global HIV Awareness Campaign

For the first time in Brazil, post offices will join efforts to prevent new HIV infections. The local take on the global campaign “Post Offices Fighting Against AIDS”, was launched Tuesday 9 February in a post office in Brasilia, the capital of the country.

Kenyan TV drama, ‘Shuga’, entertains as it raises AIDS awareness

At its New York headquarters, UNICEF highlighted a recent collaboration with MTV through a screening of ‘Shuga’, a three-part TV drama about a group of young friends living in Nairobi, Kenya. As they explore the complexities of love, the characters confront the risk of HIV infection.

UNAIDS staff member carries Olympic Flame in Calgary

UNAIDS staff member Eric Sawyer will be carrying the Olympic Flame in Calgary, Canada on 20 January as part of the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay leading up to the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, to be held from 12-28 February.

South African Muppet Kami speaks the language of acceptance

Sesame Street fans across the world are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the popular children’s television programme this year. In South Africa, the programme’s local version called Takalani Sesame is revelling in the popularity of its mustard-coloured furry Muppet, Kami, who is openly living in HIV.

Visiting South Africa for the first time in her role as a UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador, Her Serene Highness, Princess Stephanie of Monaco met with community organizations and partners at the forefront of South Africa’s response to the HIV epidemic. South Africa has one of the largest HIV epidemics, with an estimated 5.7 million people living with HIV.

Taking World AIDS Day to the airwaves: Radio station 4U1AIDS

To mark 2009 World AIDS Day a special amateur radio station 4U1AIDS will operate from UNAIDS Secretariat headquarters in Geneva from 1-7 December 2009 and will be broadcast all over the world via the amateur radio network. The initiative is to encourage radio amateurs all around the globe to participate in World AIDS Day.

UNAIDS Executive Director, Yao Ming and Government launch campaign against discrimination in China

UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé and the Chinese Vice-Minister of Health, Huang Jiefu, launched a campaign in Beijing earlier today to address HIV-related stigma and discrimination. Chinese basketball star Yao Ming and a group of fans that include people living with HIV are the face of the campaign which features two videos and a poster.

Michel Sidibé awarded Monaco distinction by His Serene Highness Prince Albert II

UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé was awarded the Order of Saint Charles along with UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura in the Principality of Monaco during the country’s National Day. The order rewards merit and service to the state or Prince of Monaco and is one of the country’s most prestigious distinctions.

Artists in Russia come together to spread awareness about HIV

UNAIDS and the All-Russian Union of People Living with HIV came together for the second time to support the international project Art Against AIDS that unites well-known artists in the response to the HIV epidemic in Russia. This year, proceeds from the sale of art at the exhibition went to low-income families raising children living with HIV.
