Mr Joel Rehnstrom, Director, Planning, Finance and Accountability Department
As Director of Planning, Finance and Accountability, Joel Rehnstrom’s responsibilities include ensuring the integrity of UNAIDS resource planning and financial management policies, procedures and infrastructure; implementing appropriate risk management, oversight and control mechanisms; introducing resource allocation and financial management systems that maximize effectiveness and savings; monitoring performance and reporting on resource utilization.
Joel Rehnstrom’s previous assigments with UNAIDS include serving as Director of Financial Management and Accountability, Chief of Budget, Finance and Administration, Country Coordinator in China, Chief of Planning and Budget, and Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist.
Prior to joining UNAIDS Mr Rehnstrom worked as Evaluation Specialist with WHO and the UN Volunteers in Geneva, Assistant Resident Representative with UNDP in Yemen, and Programme Officer with UNICEF in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bhutan.
Mr Rehnstrom holds a Ph.D. in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He also holds a Master’s and Bachelor of Arts degree from Abo Akademi University in Finland where he is from.
