- Community-led programmes critical to progress on AIDS in Sri Lanka
- Communities at higher risk of HIV infections should be placed at the centre of the AIDS programme design and implementation in Sri Lanka. This was the central message highlighted through discussions between representatives of civil society and the UNAIDS Deputy Executive Director, Programme, Luiz Loures, during an official visit to the country from 16-18 June.
- Russia strengthens commitment to reversing the AIDS epidemic in the region
- The Russian Federation and UNAIDS have launched a new Regional Cooperation Programme for Technical Assistance for HIV and other Infectious Diseases in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The US$ 16 million Programme, funded by the Russian Government, was launched during the G20 Civil Summit which was held in Moscow from 11-13 June.
- Engagement of civil society critical to shaping the G20 agenda
- As part of its role as President of the G20—the group of the 20 major economies—Russia has this week hosted the G20 Civil Summit. The two-day event featured a bold dialogue among global civil society and decision-makers and culminated in the development of a ‘Civil Communique’––recommendations which will be presented to the G20 to be put onto the agenda of the G20 Leaders' Summit which is being held in St. Petersburg in September 2013.
- China’s Guangdong province to lift HIV restrictions on teacher recruitment
- In Guangdong, China’s most populous province, some bold HIV-related policy decisions are about to come into play. In the wake of concerted advocacy efforts—including by UNAIDS, UNESCO and ILO—the province has announced it will abolish restrictions which prevent people living with HIV from working as teachers.
- Wahidayah shelter shines light on the strength of women living with HIV in Malaysia
- In a quiet street, 40 minutes outside the bustling city centre of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is a house with multi-coloured walls, filled with smiles and laughter. The laughter is coming from the Wahidayah shelter, a refuge for women living with HIV.

- UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé thanked the Mogho Naba, the King of the Mossi for encouraging traditional leaders and religious organizations to support the AIDS response in Burkina Faso. Mr Sidibé met with the King in his palace in Ouagadougou on 21 December.

- The United Nations (UN) in Liberia has joined Mozambique, Swaziland, Rwanda and Ghana in launching the ‘Friends of UN Plus’ as part of its efforts to achieve a work environment that is free from stigma for all UN staff living with HIV and their families.

- The Standard Bank Group (SBG) and UNAIDS formalised, on 22 November, what had already been a long-term collaboration in the response to AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. They signed an official memorandum of understanding (MoU) for an initial period of two years to further collaborate on AIDS education and advocacy initiatives in the workplace.

- The International Labour Organization (ILO), together with UNAIDS and the World Health Organization, launched on 27 November the “Getting to Zero at Work” campaign to promote the rights of people living with HIV in the workplace. The initiative recognizes the vital role that the world of work plays in the response to AIDS.
- Ahead of World AIDS Day CEOs call to end HIV travel restrictions
- This World AIDS Day, Chief Executives (CEO’s) from some of the world’s largest companies are calling for an end to travel restrictions for people living with HIV. More than 40 CEOs have signed an unprecedented pledge urging the repeal of laws and policies in 45 countries that still deport, detain or deny entry to people solely because they are living with HIV.
- New reports show slight growth in philanthropic funding for AIDS–More robust response needed
- Private AIDS-related funding from United States and European philanthropic donors totaled US$ 644 million in 2011, a 5% increase (US$ 32 million) from 2010 according to an annual report from Funders Concerned About AIDS (FCAA) and the European HIV/AIDS Funders Group (EFG), with support from the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).
- Indonesia to push for social inclusiveness as a global development goal
- Indonesia’s Head of the President’s Delivery Unit for Development Monitoring and Oversight and advisor to Indonesia’s President on the post 2015 development agenda, Kuntoro Mangkusubroto committed to not only maintaining but expanding key global development goals during a meeting with UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé in Jakarta on Wednesday.
- Young people living with HIV in Latin America make their voices heard
- The Network of Positive Youth for Latin America and the Caribbean has launched a regional consultation for young people living with HIV. The aim of the consultation is to obtain information on the realities that young people living with HIV face in their everyday lives in order to develop new and more effective HIV strategies focused on their specific needs.
- The hopes and dreams of young women growing up with HIV
- A group of nine inspirational young women born with HIV recently came together at UNAIDS headquarters in Geneva to share their experiences and to build a foundation for work in the future. The gathering was part of a broader agenda to promote and protect the human rights, especially the sexual and reproduction health and rights, of all women living with HIV. This is their message to the world which they would like to share on the first ever International Day of the Girl Child.
- Breaking the cycle of stigma and discrimination in rural Uganda
- Justine, a 38-year-old Ugandan woman, tested positive for HIV during an antenatal visit at the local health centre when she was pregnant with her fourth child. After disclosing her HIV status to her husband, he left home and never came back.
