HIV travel restrictions – a primary obstacle to universal access for migrants

There are still about 50 countries, territories and areas around the world that impose some form of restriction on the entry, stay and residence of people living with HIV. Such restrictions remain a key form of discrimination, affecting the rights and freedom of movement of many migrants living with HIV and would-be migrants.
Community representatives air regional concerns in the AIDS response

A wide range of representatives from key affected communities in the AIDS response joined UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé on 27 August for an interactive dialogue to share their concerns and reflections. The hour-long session, organized on the second day of the 10th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP), was held in memory of Dr Robert Carr, a well known AIDS activist and human rights defender who passed away in May 2011.
Faith leaders discuss ending stigma at prayer breakfast meeting

On the closing day of the United Nations General Assembly High Level Meeting on AIDS, faith-leaders came together with people living with HIV, representatives from key populations at higher risk of infection and other partners in the AIDS response to discuss ways to end stigma and to build strong collaborative partnerships for future action at country level.

World leaders gathered in New York for the 2011 United Nations High Level Meeting on AIDS have today launched a Global Plan that will make significant strides towards eliminating new HIV infections among children by 2015 and keeping their mothers alive.

The Global Business Coalition Annual Conference and Awards Dinner took place from 1-2 June in New York. This year’s event marked the 10th anniversary of the coalition and brought together more than 1 000 business executives, policy makers, celebrities and thought leaders to discuss on the corporate response to global health challenges and identify new avenues for future business action.

A 40-foot converted shipping container making its way around European cities is vividly highlighting the work of North Star Alliance. This public-private partnership is committed to building a network of roadside clinics at transport ‘hotspots’ across Africa to provide long-haul truck drivers, sex workers and surrounding communities with access to basic health care.

I am pleased to see that growing collaboration between HIV and tuberculosis (TB) programmes is bearing fruit. Since 2002 there has been an 80-fold increase in the number of TB patients who were tested for HIV.
Churches called to task on preventing and reducing the impact of sexual violence

The findings from recent research on the role of the church in responding to sexual violence have been presented at an event in London, hosted by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The report, Silent No More, commissioned by the Christian relief and development agency Tearfund, is a self-critical look at the way in which churches have responded to sexual violence in three African countries that have been or are still facing conflict.
First Russian network to improve the quality of life of women affected by HIV

The first Russian network of women living with HIV is uniting women, organizations and associations from various parts of Russia. The goal of the network is to improve the quality of life for women affected by HIV.
