UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, former US President Bill Clinton, movie director Spike Lee and international recording artists Will.I.Am and David Guetta are in New York to launch MASSIVEGOOD. This new fundraising tool will enable travellers to make a “micro-contribution” towards major global health causes every time they buy a plane ticket, reserve a hotel room or rent a car.

King of Swaziland calls for reinforced national response to AIDS

We took the opportunity to ask Dr Wijnroks about her role as her country’s AIDS Ambassador, and discussed some of the key issues in the Dutch approach to the global issue of HIV.

Removing bottle-necks for Universal Access in Central African Republic

The Central African Republic, one of the poorest countries in the world, has been heavily affected by the HIV epidemic. It is estimated that 160 000 people are living with HIV in the country, and only one in four of those in need have access to Anti-Retroviral Treatment (ART).

Lack of resources could undermine gains made in the HIV response in Pakistan

Pakistan’s capacity to effectively respond to the HIV epidemic could be hindered due to the lack of resources to implement its revised National Strategic Framework. The framework, endorsed by partners involved in the response, provides evidence-based strategic direction to urgently address the increasing levels of HIV infection amongst injecting drug users (IDUs) and other populations through sexual transmission and avoid a spillover to the general population.

Spotlight on the Middle East and North Africa Region

The HIV epidemic in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, while seldom highlighted, is steadily growing. In 2008 there were an estimated 310 000 people living with HIV, up from 200 000 in 2001. In that same year, approximately 35 000 people became newly infected with HIV in the region.

Kenya Launches 3rd National AIDS Strategic Plan

Kenya’s third generation National AIDS Strategic Plan was launched by the country’s Prime Minister Hon. Raila Odinga in Nairobi. Built on the recently undertaken Modes of Transmission analysis, the plan responds to the need to rethink some of the priorities of the HIV response to align them with the evidence now on hand.

Michel Sidibé commends China’s progress in AIDS response

UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé, during his visit to China, commended the People’s Republic of China on rises in domestic spending for HIV prevention and care in spite of a global financial crisis where other countries are weighing the risks of making cuts.

Global Fund approves US$2.4 billion in new grants

The Board of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria concluded its 20th meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia with the approval of new grants with a two-year commitment of US$2.4 billion.

Moldova: NGOs coming together to strengthen HIV response

Speaking with many voices and representing many different perspectives, the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play a key role in the response to the AIDS epidemic in countries around the world. As key partners in the development of national AIDS responses, NGOs are well positioned to provide quantative and qualitative information to augment the data collected by governments.

UNAIDS to receive additional funding from UK

UNAIDS and its cosponsor UNFPA have been ranked as best performers in a recent assessment of four UN agencies, including UNDP and WHO, conducted by UK’s Department for International Development (DFID). As a result, both organizations will receive full additional funding to further support projects on the ground.

Economic Progress not enough to change the future course of the epidemic: AIDS in Asia needs bold policy changes

Six Asian countries experiencing rapid economic transition have yet to prioritize HIV prevention resources for high-impact programmes. Political will and social acceptance will be needed to allocate resources for HIV services for sex workers and their clients, injecting drug users and men who have sex with men.

Lesotho: HIV free babies bring hope

Morocco: Coming together to strengthen the AIDS response in the workplace

The world of work is a key arena for successfully challenging the AIDS epidemic. To promote this challenge in Morocco, the Ministry of Employment, in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and UNAIDS, hosted a two-day national workshop on HIV workplace programmes in Casablanca at the end of June.
