Carnival queens call on Panamanian young women to take the lead and protect themselves from HIV

Last week was Carnival in Panama. As part of the celebrations during 11-12 February, the Queens of “Calle Arriba” and “Calle Abajo” —representing opposite neighbourhoods— competed against each other in a variety of contests. However when it comes to HIV, the two rivals joined forces to prevent new HIV infections among women.
Yemen: raising HIV awareness among internally displaced populations

Local authorities are concerned about the lack of HIV information in the internally displaced people camps in Yemen and have partnered with UNAIDS and the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) to start an HIV awareness raising programme for displaced people.

According to the Ministry of Health of Gabon, only 1 out of 2 young Gabonese aged 15-24 have a comprehensive knowledge on HIV in a country where the prevalence rate among youth aged 15-24 is about 4.8%, and 15% of youth have sexual relationships before the age of 15.

UNAIDS and Standard Bank Group partner to bring HIV awareness to the workplace

The Standard Bank Group (SBG) and UNAIDS formalised, on 22 November, what had already been a long-term collaboration in the response to AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. They signed an official memorandum of understanding (MoU) for an initial period of two years to further collaborate on AIDS education and advocacy initiatives in the workplace.
Ukraine to lead the AIDS response in Eastern Europe

A senior delegation from Ukraine led by the Vice-Prime-Minister and Minister of Health, Raisa Bogatyrova met with UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé at the UNAIDS Headquarters in Geneva on 12 September 2012. Homophobia and punitive laws continue to threaten HIV responses and human rights

In many regions of the world, punitive laws and practices against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and intersex (LGBTI) individuals continue to block effective responses to HIV. A range of human rights violations have been documented, from denial of health services and freedom of association to harassment, violence and murder.
