HIV prevention in Olympic Villages

As part of a joint HIV prevention campaign which will run throughout the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, free condoms will be made available in Olympic Villages; and athletes will be educated about HIV and encouraged to be ambassadors of the AIDS response.

Leaders pledge to promote sexual health to stop HIV in Latin America and the Caribbean

At the conclusion of the 1st Meeting of Ministers of Education and Health to stop HIV in Latin America and the Caribbean, Ministers have signed an historic declaration committing to provide comprehensive sex education to adolescents and young people in the region.

Preventing HIV, preserving the environment

The use of condoms in Brazil is preventing the spread of HIV and it might also be helping to save the rainforest thanks to a condom factory opened in April in the Amazon region. This unique factory uses natural latex collected by local rubber tappers and it will be able to supply the Brazilian government with 100 million condoms a year.

Meeting ethical concerns over HIV trials

In the first of a special three-part web series, www.unaids.org looks at the state of research into new HIV prevention technologies, the ethical debates around the issue, and the steps that have been taken to answer the concerns. The question of HIV trials, and in particular the involvement of women and adolescent girls in them, will be the subject of a two-day conference being hosted by UNAIDS in Geneva December 10-11.
Concern over Criminalization of HIV Transmission

Several countries have recently introduced laws to criminalise HIV transmission, or exposing another person to the virus. A number of jurisdictions have used general laws against serious bodily harm in cases where someone is accused of knowingly transmitting HIV or willingly exposing others to HIV transmission.
