- Ten years since PEPFAR’s launch: The United States continues its leadership in the AIDS response
- Exactly ten years ago, President George W. Bush announced the creation of The Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in his State of the Union Address. When it was created, back in 2003, PEPFAR’s initial aim was to provide antiretroviral treatment to 2 million people living with HIV in resource-limited settings, to prevent 7 million new HIV infections, and to provide care and support to 10 million people by 2010.

- UNAIDS Executive Director congratulates President Jacob Zuma of South Africa on progress in the AIDS response
- The President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma met with UNAIDS Executive Director, Michel Sidibé, on 18 January at the president’s official residence in Pretoria. Mr Sidibé congratulated President Zuma on the country’s achievements in the AIDS response in recent years and reiterated the support of UNAIDS.

- UNAIDS Executive Director, Michel Sidibé met with the Deputy President of South Africa, Kgalema Motlanthe and the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi on 18 January.
- UNAIDS salutes the leadership of Burkina Faso’s President
- UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé congratulated the President of Burkina Faso, Blaise Compaoré for his personal engagement in his country’s AIDS response during a meeting held on 20 December in the country’s capital of Ouagadougou. New HIV infections in Burkina Faso have dropped by 60% in the past ten years.
- UNAIDS Executive Director applauds Ethiopia on its remarkable progress in the AIDS response
- UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé congratulated the country on the dramatic decline in new HIV infections it has achieved during the past ten years on 17 December, while on an official visit to Ethiopia. Between 2001 and 2011, the rate of new HIV infections in Ethiopia among adults has been reduced by 90%.
- South Africa’s savings in procurement of antiretroviral drugs to increase access to treatment for people living with HIV
- South Africa has, for the second time in a row, reduced the cost of procurement of antiretrovirals (ARVs) as announced by South African Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi on 29 November.
- UNAIDS commends United States’ commitment to achieving an AIDS-free generation
- The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) welcomes the unveiling of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) Blueprint: Creating an AIDS-free Generation, by United States Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. The Blueprint builds on the remarkable results that have been achieved to date and sets a bold course for the future. The new US plan of action focuses on four critical pillars: saving lives, smart investments, shared responsibility and driving results with science.
- New momentum in the Arab AIDS response opens doors for change
- At a meeting convened by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, under the auspices of the League of Arab States and supported by UNAIDS, governmental and non-governmental representatives recognized the need for urgent action as MENA is one of only two regions where the epidemic continues to grow.

- The Minister of Health of Costa Rica, Dr Daisy Corrales, is strengthening the AIDS response among key populations at higher risk in her country, which is where the epidemic remains concentrated.

- An urbanization movement has challenged Namibia’s capital City of Windhoek to find new ways to reach residents with health and HIV services.
- Myanmar overcomes major challenges to push forward its response to HIV
- The Vice-President of Myanmar, Dr Sai Mauk Kham, reconfirmed his government’s commitment to carrying out effective HIV programmes during a meeting with UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé. The two leaders met in Nay Pyi Taw, the country’s capital, where they discussed the progress made by Myanmar in responding to HIV despite the enormous challenges faced by the country.
- Indonesia’s Minister of Health promises to transform the national response to AIDS
- Indonesia’s Minister of Health, Nafsiah Mboi, pledged to scale up HIV testing and treatment programmes, leading to zero new HIV infections and zero AIDS-related deaths. Minister Mboi met with UNAIDS Executive Director, Michel Sidibé on Tuesday, on the first day of his two day trip to Indonesia.
- Zambia learns from Kenya’s experience in developing HIV programmes for key populations at higher risk
- From 24 - 28 September 2012, members of the National AIDS Council of Zambia, with support from the country’s United Nations Joint Team on AIDS, visited to Kenya to learn about their HIV programmes to reach key populations including sex workers, people who inject drugs, men who have sex with men and transgender people.
- First Lady of the Democratic Republic of the Congo calls for the elimination of new HIV infections among children
- On the sidelines of the 14th Summit of the Francophonie, the First Lady of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Marie Olive Lembé Kabila, launched the initiative “Rolling back malaria and eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV.”
- UNAIDS Executive Director meets Prime Minister of Democratic Republic of the Congo
- In a meeting on 12 October with the Prime Minister of Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Matata Ponyo Mapon, UNAIDS Executive Director praised DRC’s leadership for organizing the 14th Summit of La Francophonie, which will be held in Kinshasa from 13-14 October.

- In a meeting on 11 October at the Presidential Palace in Brazzaville, UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé praised Congolese President Denis Sassou-Nguesso for gains in the national AIDS response and called for shared responsibility to close remaining gaps.
