United States Congressional Staff first-hand view of Zambia’s AIDS response

A delegation of nine United States Congressional staff members travelled to Zambia from 18 – 24 February. The aim of the visit was to have a first-hand understanding of the progress made and challenges remaining in scaling up HIV treatment, care and prevention programs in one of the most heavily impacted countries Sub-Saharan Africa.
UNDP and UNAIDS Leaders Begin High Level Joint Mission in New Zealand

The Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Helen Clark, and the Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), Michel Sidibé, began a three day mission in New Zealand—the first joint mission by the two UN leaders in this Pacific country.
Zimbabwe: AIDS levy generates new resources for treatment

An additional 70 000 Zimbabweans living with HIV will get access to anti-retroviral (ARV) treatment by the end of 2012, using the country’s National AIDS Trust Fund. This announcement by the Zimbabwe National AIDS Council is a welcome sign for a country that has some 1.2 million adults and children living with HIV in 2009.
Bénin launches national plan to prevent new HIV infections among children

UNAIDS survey finds growing concern in countries over potential funding roll back by Global Fund

UNAIDS has conducted a 15-country rapid survey to understand the possible impact of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria’s recent decision to cancel its next funding round (Round 11). The survey looks at the impact of this decision on the ability of countries to scale up access to HIV and tuberculosis programmes.

UNAIDS Board members learn about Kenya’s AIDS response

Global Fund implementers meeting: opportunities and challenges

UNAIDS, in collaboration with WHO and Stop TB Partnership, convened a two day consultation with implementers of Global Fund programmes in Nairobi from 3 - 4 November. This consultation was called to create a platform for implementers to discuss the changes taking place within the Global Fund, to help shape this transformation and contribute to the increased ownership and effective implementation of the reforms.
Political commitment towards the elimination of new HIV infections among children in Burundi

Burundi is a small densely populated country located in sub-Saharan Africa with an HIV prevalence of 2.97% among the general population. It is also one of 22 countries worldwide that has contributed to the development of and signed up to implement the Global Plan towards the elimination of new HIV infections among children by 2015 and keeping their mothers alive.

Russian Federation convenes high level forum on MDG-6

A three-day meeting in Moscow, hosted by the Government of the Russian Federation, brought together high level representatives from government, civil society, the private sector and scientific community. The Forum is an unprecedented platform to redouble progress towards the sixth Millennium Development Goal (MDG) in the region.
UNAIDS Executive Director official visit to South Africa

UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé started a seven-day visit to South Africa on 27 September which will focus on the country’s efforts to ending new HIV infections amongst children by 2015, HIV integration services and bridging the science and implementation divide.
