- United States Congressional Staff first-hand view of Zambia’s AIDS response
- A delegation of nine United States Congressional staff members travelled to Zambia from 18 – 24 February. The aim of the visit was to have a first-hand understanding of the progress made and challenges remaining in scaling up HIV treatment, care and prevention programs in one of the most heavily impacted countries Sub-Saharan Africa.
- UNDP and UNAIDS Leaders Begin High Level Joint Mission in New Zealand
- The Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Helen Clark, and the Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), Michel Sidibé, began a three day mission in New Zealand—the first joint mission by the two UN leaders in this Pacific country.
- Zimbabwe: AIDS levy generates new resources for treatment
- An additional 70 000 Zimbabweans living with HIV will get access to anti-retroviral (ARV) treatment by the end of 2012, using the country’s National AIDS Trust Fund. This announcement by the Zimbabwe National AIDS Council is a welcome sign for a country that has some 1.2 million adults and children living with HIV in 2009.
- Bénin launches national plan to prevent new HIV infections among children
- The Government of the Republic Bénin, in collaboration with UNAIDS, UNICEF, WHO, UNFPA and partners, today launched a national plan aimed at eliminating new HIV infections among children and improving the health of their mothers.

- UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé called today on African governments to take on a greater share of AIDS investments in their own countries and across the region. Addressing an audience of African Heads of State in Addis Ababa, Mr Sidibé said that financing a sustainable response to the HIV epidemic in Africa will require home grown and innovative solutions that meet the needs of the African people.

- New government of Libya identifies AIDS as a priority
- A Libyan delegation headed by the Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Adel M. Abushoffa met with UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé on 24 January at UNAIDS headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The aim of the meeting was to set up the short-term priorities for the country’s response to AIDS as well as to establish the basis for the development of a strong national AIDS plan.

- On World AIDS Day, 1 December 2011, the President of the Republic of South Africa, President Jacob Zuma, officially launched the new South African National Strategic Plan (NSP) on HIV, STIs and TB, 2012–2016.
- ICASA leaders’ panel: Keeping the promise in the HIV response
- African leaders met on Monday 5 December at a special roundtable session during the 2011 International Conference of AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA 2011) to take stock of the efforts and promises made towards the AIDS response, the challenges and the way forward to fulfill these commitments.
- Gains in Ethiopia’s national AIDS response highlighted at World AIDS Day event
- Ethiopia’s progress in its national AIDS response has been celebrated at a World AIDS Day commemoration event in Addis Ababa, which was attended by the UNAIDS Deputy Executive Director, Management and External Relations, Ms. Jan Beagle.
- Unparalleled global progress in HIV response but sustained investment vital
- Global progress in both preventing and treating HIV emphasizes the benefits of sustaining investment in HIV/AIDS over the longer term. The latest report by the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and UNAIDS "Report on the Global HIV/AIDS Response" indicates that increased access to HIV services resulted in a 15% reduction of new infections over the past decade and a 22% decline in AIDS-related deaths in the last five years.
- UNAIDS Board members learn about Kenya’s AIDS response
- A delegation of the UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board (PCB) has just concluded a field visit to Kenya. The delegation learned first hand about the government’s strong commitment to a multi-sectoral and integrated AIDS response, including working with civil society organizations in planning and delivering HIV services.

- In order to help countries produce standardized reports to effectively measure the state of the epidemic, UNAIDS has released the new guidelines on Global AIDS Response Progress Reporting 2012.
- Political commitment towards the elimination of new HIV infections among children in Burundi
- Burundi is a small densely populated country located in sub-Saharan Africa with an HIV prevalence of 2.97% among the general population. It is also one of 22 countries worldwide that has contributed to the development of and signed up to implement the Global Plan towards the elimination of new HIV infections among children by 2015 and keeping their mothers alive.
- UNAIDS welcomes continued leadership and commitment of the United States to the AIDS response
- The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) commends the United States Government on its continued leadership in the AIDS response following the call by the US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for global solidarity to “change the course of the epidemic and usher in an AIDS-free generation”.

- In a meeting with Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga on 2 November, UNAIDS Executive Director commended the Government of Kenya on progress in the country’s HIV response, including the significant scale-up in treatment access and expansion of services to prevent new HIV infections among children.
- Luxembourg stands firm in its commitment to HIV
- UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé commended the country’s contribution to the AIDS response and its support to UNAIDS at a meeting with the Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, Marie-Josée Jacobs in Luxembourg.

- UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé started a seven-day visit to South Africa on 27 September which will focus on the country’s efforts to ending new HIV infections amongst children by 2015, HIV integration services and bridging the science and implementation divide.
