New government of Libya identifies AIDS as a priority

A Libyan delegation headed by the Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Adel M. Abushoffa met with UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé on 24 January at UNAIDS headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The aim of the meeting was to set up the short-term priorities for the country’s response to AIDS as well as to establish the basis for the development of a strong national AIDS plan.

Global progress in both preventing and treating HIV emphasizes the benefits of sustaining investment in HIV/AIDS over the longer term. The latest report by the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and UNAIDS "Report on the Global HIV/AIDS Response" indicates that increased access to HIV services resulted in a 15% reduction of new infections over the past decade and a 22% decline in AIDS-related deaths in the last five years.

Burundi is a small densely populated country located in sub-Saharan Africa with an HIV prevalence of 2.97% among the general population. ‘Thinking politically’: strategies for effective responses to HIV in Asia and the Pacific

Activists, academics and HIV programme implementers met in Busan, South Korea at the 10th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP 10) to explore and debate the political complexities of HIV responses. The event, entitled ‘Political Sciences and the Politics of HIV in Asia and the Pacific,’ shed light on the often highly political nature of responses to the epidemic.

The AIDS epidemic in Asia and the Pacific is at a crossroads, according to a new report from the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). While the region has seen impressive gains—including a 20% drop in new HIV infections since 2001 and a three-fold increase in access to antiretroviral therapy since 2006—progress is threatened by an inadequate focus on key populations at higher risk of HIV infection and insufficient funding from both domestic and international sources.
