South Africa committed to achieving universal access

South Africa is transforming its AIDS response. Today, the Deputy President of South Africa HE Mr Kgalema Motlanthe met with Executive Directors of UNAIDS and Global Fund in Johannesburg. He recommitted his government’s commitment to meet their universal access targets.

Handbook on HIV for Parliamentarians developed in Cambodia

Political commitment at the highest level is recognized as a critical factor in Cambodia’s success in creating a supportive legislative and policy environment for the national response to HIV. With support from the National AIDS Authority, the UNDP Legislature Assistance Project of the National Assembly, , Family Health International USAID funded Prasit Project and UNAIDS, a Parliamentary Handbook on HIV has been developed.

Nigeria to accelerate universal access efforts in HIV response

There are nearly three million people living with HIV in Nigeria. After South Africa, the country has the largest number of people living with HIV in the continent. Each day there are about 1000 new infections. National HIV prevalence is around 4.6%. But these figures mask the multiple epidemics in the various states of the country. Many of the people living with HIV are poor. Add to this stigma and discrimination.

Removing bottle-necks for Universal Access in Central African Republic

The Central African Republic, one of the poorest countries in the world, has been heavily affected by the HIV epidemic. It is estimated that 160 000 people are living with HIV in the country, and only one in four of those in need have access to Anti-Retroviral Treatment (ART).

Lack of resources could undermine gains made in the HIV response in Pakistan

Pakistan’s capacity to effectively respond to the HIV epidemic could be hindered due to the lack of resources to implement its revised National Strategic Framework. The framework, endorsed by partners involved in the response, provides evidence-based strategic direction to urgently address the increasing levels of HIV infection amongst injecting drug users (IDUs) and other populations through sexual transmission and avoid a spillover to the general population.

Kenya Launches 3rd National AIDS Strategic Plan

Kenya’s third generation National AIDS Strategic Plan was launched by the country’s Prime Minister Hon. Raila Odinga in Nairobi. Built on the recently undertaken Modes of Transmission analysis, the plan responds to the need to rethink some of the priorities of the HIV response to align them with the evidence now on hand.

16 Days of Activism: The forgotten victims of conflict in the Congo

Tomorrow, December 10 marks the end of 16 days of activism to end violence against women, an international campaign. UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, is taking the opportunity to draw attention to its work, alongside local partners, in challenging the very high number of rapes occurring in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

UNHCR chief pledges to keep AIDS response a priority

As the world marked World Aids Day on Tuesday, UNHCR’s chief, António Guterres, noted that the UN Refugee Agency had expanded its global HIV and AIDS interventions. Guterres, while reiterating his personal commitment to keeping AIDS a priority for UNHCR, also stressed that his agency would continue to advocate for the abolishment of laws discriminating against those with HIV.

President heralds new era in South Africa’s AIDS response

South Africa’s response to AIDS received a powerful boost with President Jacob Zuma’s landmark speech to the National Council of Provinces on 29 October 2009. The speech heralds the beginning of a new movement to accelerate access towards universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support in the country which has the largest number of people living with HIV. In his speech the President calls on all leaders to work together and use evidence to inform the country’s AIDS response.

Going beyond social taboos: Parliamentarians begin inclusive dialogue with key groups in Pakistan

In a move to counter social exclusion and change discriminatory practices, a dialogue has begun in Pakistan between the government, parliamentarians and communities often overlooked by policymakers. An historic meeting was held late last month when a number of parliamentarians began a dialogue with community members on the challenges facing transgendered people, people who use drugs and people living with HIV. This meeting was a first, and aimed to create an enabling environment for policy changes related to HIV.

Eastern Europe and Central Asia HIV conference for joint efforts towards Universal Access

The 3rd HIV/AIDS Conference in Eastern Europe and Central Asia opened in Moscow today with a ceremony attended by senior representatives of Russian Duma, Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Russian Academy of Sciences and the US Ambassador to the Russian Federation. Participants and organizers hope it will invigorate the regional response to the AIDS epidemic.

UNAIDS Executive Director joins Chief Minister to launch Learning Site on HIV and sex work in Bangalore, India

In Bangalore earlier today, UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé joined the Chief Minister of Karnataka, B.S. Yediyurappa at the official launch of the Ashodaya Academy – the first learning site on HIV in the Asia-Pacific region run entirely by sex workers. The Chief Minister welcomed the opening of the centre in Mysore, which begins its first HIV training course with over 200 sex workers from Ashodya, as well as participants from as far away as Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Myanmar and Nepal.
