UNAIDS meets with the King of the Mossi

UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé thanked the Mogho Naba, the King of the Mossi for encouraging traditional leaders and religious organizations to support the AIDS response in Burkina Faso. Mr Sidibé met with the King in his palace in Ouagadougou on 21 December.

Hundreds of youth leaders gathered in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso on 20 December for the Third Pan-African Youth Leadership Summit. The meeting is focusing on how young people can contribute to a post-2015 development agenda and reach the UNAIDS vision of zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths.

UNDP’s Administrator Helen Clark concludes four-country Africa tour

The Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Helen Clark recently ended a four-country tour of Africa to highlight progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the run-up to the MDGs Summit in September 2010. Ms Clark travelled to Mali, Burkina Faso, Tanzania, and South Africa.

Evidence shows new drug combination dramatically reduces mother-to child transmission of HIV during breastfeeding

According to a new study led by WHO, if HIV-positive pregnant women are given a combination of antiretroviral drugs from late in pregnancy until six months into breastfeeding, rather than a short course of drugs that ends at delivery, their babies are over 40% less likely to become infected with HIV.

At the 6th annual session of Burkina Faso’s National AIDS Commission, President Blaise Compaoré underlined his personal commitment to AIDS issues, chairing the 10-hour session and calling for a scaling-up of the AIDS response towards universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support in the country.
