More than 150 male and female sex workers marched through the Central Business District (CBD) of Nairobi, Kenya on 3 March claiming respect for their rights. Participants wearing masks signifying the hidden nature of their work walked from Koinange Street—Nairobi’s leading venue for sex work—to the Mayor’s office at City Hall.

UNAIDS, in collaboration with WHO and Stop TB Partnership, convened a two day consultation with implementers of Global Fund programmes in Nairobi from 3 - 4 November. This consultation was called to create a platform for implementers to discuss the changes taking place within the Global Fund, to help shape this transformation and contribute to the increased ownership and effective implementation of the reforms.

UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake joined the Kenya Government and other partners on Friday in rolling out an innovative approach to prevent the transmission of HIV from mothers to their babies. The initiative includes a “Mother-Baby-Pack” of antiretroviral drugs and antibiotics, which women can easily administer at home.

Africa prepares to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV by 2015

UNAIDS Executive Director Mr Michel Sidibé has called for the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV by 2015. Africa is responding to this call. This week participants from 20 countries with the highest burden of infections among pregnant women are meeting in Nairobi to chart a course of action to accelerate access to the needed HIV services.

Breaking down cultural barriers to address HIV

Cultural structures and systems can facilitate or inhibit the success of HIV programs such as voluntary male circumcision, PMTCT and social protection. Executive Director of UNAIDS, Michel Sidibé visited the Luo Council of Elders in the western part of Kenya to discuss their role in social transformation, during his five day official visit to the country.

Kenya Launches 3rd National AIDS Strategic Plan

Kenya’s third generation National AIDS Strategic Plan was launched by the country’s Prime Minister Hon. Raila Odinga in Nairobi. Built on the recently undertaken Modes of Transmission analysis, the plan responds to the need to rethink some of the priorities of the HIV response to align them with the evidence now on hand.

Evidence shows new drug combination dramatically reduces mother-to child transmission of HIV during breastfeeding

According to a new study led by WHO, if HIV-positive pregnant women are given a combination of antiretroviral drugs from late in pregnancy until six months into breastfeeding, rather than a short course of drugs that ends at delivery, their babies are over 40% less likely to become infected with HIV.

Leonard is the father of five daughters, one of whom, recently turned 14, was born HIV positive. In addition to juggling with the responsibility of raising a family of girls, Leonard is becoming very concerned about the new challenges he’s facing with having a positive teenage girl at home. “She is growing and as a father, I must help her grow into a mature and responsible woman. How should I talk to her about sex given her HIV positive status without instilling a sense of guilt? I do not find the guidance to help me respond to her needs,” he said.

Kenya’s experience informs new resource for increasing coordination on AIDS

Joint Annual Programme Reviews mobilize people from across the spectrum of AIDS work to create a clearer picture of a country’s epidemic, which helps improve national planning and spending on AIDS. A new UNAIDS resource aims to assist governments in conducting their national reviews by sharing experiences learned by Kenya and other countries.
