Ms Le Frak, a film producer from the USA and now social entrepreneur, started Same Sky while trying to make a film about the genocide in Rwanda. Although the film project never materialized, she felt there were other skill sets she could lend to make a difference in the lives of the women she met in the country.

UNAIDS Executive Director official visit to Rwanda continues

UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé has met with President of Rwanda, H.E. Paul Kagame, and the First Lady of Rwanda, H.E. Jeanette Kagame, as well as representatives of civil society organizations. Yesterday he addressed the 59th session of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Regional Committee for Africa in Kigali.

UNAIDS Executive Director’s first official visit to Rwanda

UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé will pay his first official visit to Rwanda from 27 August to 3 September to recognize and support the achievements of the Government of Rwanda in the HIV response and conduct high-level advocacy for universal access to HIV services and the Millennium Development Goals.

The route to good living: World Bank guide to HIV prevention in Africa’s transport sector

Transport corridors in sub-Saharan Africa, as elsewhere, enable movement of people and goods, increasing economic activity and spreading wealth. But they also facilitate the spread of HIV. In response, the Africa Transport Sector of the World Bank has published a practical new booklet on how to implement HIV prevention activities as part of road construction projects.
UNICEF: Communities provide a bigger ‘family’ for orphaned children in Rwanda

Bamporeze is a non-governmental organization that started a community-based protection programme for children orphaned by AIDS in Rwanda soon after the genocide in 1995. Around 150,000 people live with HIV in Rwanda; 19,000 of them are children.

In February 2006, internationally renown photographer Jonathan Torgovnik travelled to Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda for Newsweek magazine to cover the 25 years of AIDS through the eyes of UNAIDS Executive Director Peter Piot. During the Rwanda leg of the visit, Jonathan met Margaret, who not only became the subject for his pictures—and part of the Art for AIDS collection--but an inspiration for his life. Representatives from over 50 countries came together in Kigali on 16 June for the opening session of the HIV/AIDS Implementer’s Meeting. The opening remarks highlighted the importance of leadership and of scaling up partnerships to improve the quality and impact of the response to the AIDS epidemic.

Economic security for women key to HIV prevention

A new paper published today by the UNAIDS-led Global Coalition on Women and AIDS (GCWA) shows that when women have an income and a safe place to live, they are much better able to negotiate abstinence, fidelity, and safer sex. Economic security, the paper stresses, is a major factor in enabling women to protect themselves from HIV.
