Zambia learns from Kenya’s experience in developing HIV programmes for key populations at higher risk

From 24 - 28 September 2012, members of the National AIDS Council of Zambia, with support from the country’s United Nations Joint Team on AIDS, visited to Kenya to learn about their HIV programmes to reach key populations including sex workers, people who inject drugs, men who have sex with men and transgender people.

For Zambia’s young people the AIDS response has seen a number of important successes, with a significant 25% decline in HIV incidence over the last decade. However, according to a groundbreaking new report, the AIDS epidemic continues to have a huge effect on the country’s youth, especially young women, and much more needs to be done to achieve an HIV-free generation.
United States Congressional Staff first-hand view of Zambia’s AIDS response

A delegation of nine United States Congressional staff members travelled to Zambia from 18 – 24 February. The aim of the visit was to have a first-hand understanding of the progress made and challenges remaining in scaling up HIV treatment, care and prevention programs in one of the most heavily impacted countries Sub-Saharan Africa.
African leaders call for accelerated response to AIDS in Zambia

In a recent mission to Zambia the Champions for an HIV-Free Generation, an organization of African leaders which includes former presidents and other influential personalities, met with top government officials to help push Zambia’s AIDS response forward. Zambian President Rupiah Banda unveiled a new National AIDS Strategy in the presence of the Champions that aims to increase access to antiretroviral treatment and reduce HIV infections in Zambia by 50% by the year 2015.

Empowering women to protect themselves: Promoting the female condom in Zimbabwe

The female condom can be a tool for women’s empowerment, allowing them to protect their own reproductive health and that of their partners. In Zimbabwe, the national AIDS-prevention team, along with UNFPA, have seen their efforts lead to a dramatic increase in female condom use after just three years.

Early diagnosis and treatment save babies from AIDS-related death

Many infants across the world are dying needlessly because they are not being tested early enough for HIV and treated if they have the virus. Without treatment, half of all HIV-positive babies will not live long enough to see their second birthday. To help address this situation, the Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS campaign has launched a new video vividly highlighting the importance of early testing and treatment to save the lives of infants who have HIV.

Abataka: Women shape their future

International Women’s Day on 8 March is a global day of celebration to inspire women and celebrate their achievements. The theme of 2008 is “Investing in Women and Girls”. UNAIDS Special Representative Mary Fisher and the women artisans of the Abataka jewellery project believe income generation projects are critical in empowering women living with HIV, enabling them to shape their future.

Some 260 participants gathered in Lusaka for the 19th Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS governing board meeting. The meeting brought together representatives from government, civil society, donors and the United Nations to push for greater UN action to strengthen country efforts against AIDS.
