Twelve United Nations entities have issued a joined statement calling for the closure of compulsory drug detention and rehabilitation centers. The existence of such centers—which have been operating in many countries for the last 20 years—raises human rights issues and threatens the health of detainees, including through increased vulnerability to HIV and tuberculosis (TB) infection.

Asia-pacific nations pledge equal partnership with communities for accelerated regional AIDS action

The active involvement of communities most affected by HIV in the design and implementation of HIV policy and programmes has been heralded as “critical” by nations across Asia and the Pacific. Through a new Asia-Pacific HIV action plan, governments in the region have pledged to work in partnership with civil society to reach global AIDS commitments and targets.

UNAIDS applauds China’s decision to fill its HIV resource gap

China has pledged to fill its HIV resource gap by increasing domestic investments. This pledge was made China’s Premier H.E. Wen Jiabao at a World AIDS Day event in Beijing. The Premier also called on the international community to fully meet its commitments and achieve a world with zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths.

Korean football icon appointed UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador

Iconic Korean football star, Myung-Bo Hong, was appointed as a UNAIDS International Goodwill Ambassador during a press conference held at Yonsei University in Seoul. In this capacity, Myung-Bo Hong will raise awareness on HIV prevention among young people and help break down the barriers of stigma and discrimination surrounding HIV, particularly within the Republic of Korea and across Asia.

While the number of people living with HIV receiving antiretroviral therapy in Asia and Pacific almost tripled from 280 000 in 2006 to 739 000 in 2009, coverage remains low and only one in three people living with HIV had access to treatment in the region that year. UNAIDS and WHO convened partners to explore the Treatment 2.0 approach during the 10th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific.

Activists, academics and HIV programme implementers met in Busan, South Korea at the 10th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP 10) to explore and debate the political complexities of HIV responses. The event, entitled ‘Political Sciences and the Politics of HIV in Asia and the Pacific,’ shed light on the often highly political nature of responses to the epidemic.

At ICAAP 10 the new study, Secret lives, other voices, was launched. It explores sexuality, gender identity and HIV transmission risk in Fiji, and represents the first research of its kind to be conducted since 1998 among men who have sex with men and transgender people in the country.
