UNAIDS: Sourcing African solutions will be critical to ending Africa’s ‘AIDS dependency crisis’

UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé called today on African governments to take on a greater share of AIDS investments in their own countries and across the region. Addressing an audience of African Heads of State in Addis Ababa, Mr Sidibé said that financing a sustainable response to the HIV epidemic in Africa will require home grown and innovative solutions that meet the needs of the African people.
New government of Libya identifies AIDS as a priority

A Libyan delegation headed by the Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Adel M. Abushoffa met with UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé on 24 January at UNAIDS headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The aim of the meeting was to set up the short-term priorities for the country’s response to AIDS as well as to establish the basis for the development of a strong national AIDS plan.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgendered people are amongst the most stigmatized populations in the Middle East and North Africa. In spite of social tension and sensitivities, most countries in the region have recognized the importance of programming for, and working with, MSM to strengthen effective national AIDS responses.
Photography exhibition in Egypt documents the power of people to create social change and calls for end to HIV-related stigma

To highlight the power of people to create social change including ending HIV-related stigma, a photography exhibition has opened in Cairo. It displays a combination of portraits from the Egyptian revolution that took place in January 2011 and portraits submitted to a World AIDS Day photo contest in 2010 by young photographers under the theme Positive faces.
Gulf Cooperation Council Member States call for collaborative approach to effectively respond to AIDS

A new initiative “Combating AIDS in GCC countries” was hosted by the Minister of Health of Saudi Arabia, Dr Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Rabeeah and the Health Ministers Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states on 16-18 April in Riyadh. This initiative is a call for collaborative approach to keep HIV prevalence low in the GCC countries and re-affirms the political commitment of the council to respond effectively to AIDS.

Students of Master’s degree in International Health begin new module on HIV at the Senghor University of Alexandria

In 2010 UNAIDS and the Senghor University of Alexandria signed an agreement of cooperation to include a 25 hour module specific to AIDS into the university’s Master’s degree in International Health programme. The opening session of this new module, co-organized by Senghor University and UNAIDS, was held on 17 April 2011.

In the Islamic Republic of Iran, HIV prevalence among prisoners is about eight times higher than in the general population. Injecting drug use is the main mode of HIV transmission, accounting for more than 70% of reported HIV cases in Iran. During an official visit to the country, UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé highlighted the country’s progressive work in addressing its HIV epidemic in prisons and among people who inject drugs.

UNODC project provides cross-border HIV services to Afghan injecting drug users

Providing comprehensive HIV services for injecting drug users is critical to an effective HIV response. In recognition of this, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has begun to support the implementation of an initiative to make services accessible to Afghan refugees who use drugs in Iran and Pakistan, and also to Afghan drug users who have returned home.

5th Francophone conference on HIV/AIDS in Casablanca wraps up

While a wide range of AIDS epidemics occur across the Francophone world, this week in Casablanca, countries came together to speak with a common voice and with one common goal – stopping AIDS from making further inroads in French-speaking countries. Representatives from around 50 French-speaking countries wrapped up the 5th Francophone conference on HIV/AIDS today.

Partnership with faith organizations vital for effective response to HIV

Religious leaders and UNAIDS renewed their commitment to collaborate closely in order to prioritize and strengthen the response to HIV. The reassurance of their commitment came during the launch of the French language version of the UNAIDS strategic framework for partnership with Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs) in its response to HIV, that took place at the 5th Francophone conference on HIV/AIDS taking place in Casablanca from 28 to 31 March 2010.

Spotlight on human rights at the 5th Francophone Conference on AIDS

Human rights and law will be in the spotlight at the 5th Francophone Conference on AIDS held in Casablanca, Morocco from 28 to 31 March 2010. The conference is taking place against a backdrop of continuing discrimination and human rights infringement of people living with HIV across the world. There are reports of harassment, prosecution of and violence against people living with HIV in several francophone countries.
