The 1,500 participants attending the congress include Dr Peter Piot, Executive Director of UNAIDS, UNAIDS Special Representative HRH the Crown Princess of Norway, people living with HIV, regional Health Ministers, representatives from civil society, women’s organizations, religious organizations and the private sector. Dr. Cesar Antonio Nuñez, RST Director for Latin America, addressed the audience during the opening event of the V Central American Meeting of people living with HIV.

CONCASIDA participants joined a march of solidarity for people living with HIV on the evening of 6 November.The banner reads "for equality, diversity and human dignity".

The United Nations stand at CONCASIDA 2007 was one of the most visited during the conference.

5th Central American Congress on AIDS - CONCASIDA, 4 - 9 November 2007

The 5th Central American Congress on HIV is being held in Managua, Nicaragua, from 4-9 November. Over 1,500 participants are attending the Congress including representatives from governments, the United Nations, people living with HIV, women’s organizations, religious groups and the private sector.
UNAIDS Executive Director Dr Peter Piot gave one of the key note speeches at the official opening ceremony of CONCASIDA. During his speech he highlighted the need to deal with the tough issues that lie at the core of the AIDS epidemic in Central America and called for strong and exceptional leadership on AIDS.

65th World Health Assembly

On 28 April, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon led a high-level mission to Mumbai, India in support of the Every Woman Every Child initiative. Mr Ban commended Indian officials for the progress made in the AIDS response and encouraged to continue efforts to eliminate new paediatric HIV infections by 2015.

Youth leaders from around the world presented a set of youth-defined recommendations that will guide the UNAIDS Secretariat’s work on HIV and young people through 2015. The recommendations were received by UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé at an event in the Paiko community near Abuja.

“Health.Right.Now” was the theme of a conference held in Berlin on 21 November focusing on HIV prevention and human rights. Co-hosted by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the Ministry of Health, the conference aimed to discuss ways to overcome the barriers many key populations at higher risk of HIV infection encounter when accessing HIV services.

The George W. Bush Institute, U.S. Department of State, PEPFAR, Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, and UNAIDS announced on 14 September Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon®, an innovative partnership to leverage public and private investment in global health to combat cervical and breast cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America.
