In a new UNAIDS funded report the Treatment Action Group (TAG) and AVAC have compiled information on investments into research and development for HIV treatment. The report was put together in a bid to analyse investment trends and highlight any gaps which may become apparent.

The new agreement is a significant step forwards in HIV treatment for children as very few antiretroviral drugs are formulated for paediatric use. In 2012 UNAIDS estimated that 72% of children living with HIV who were eligible for treatment did not have access.
Realising the potential impact of antiretroviral therapy

The full results of a study on the effects of antiretroviral therapy in preventing new HIV infections have been published this week in the medical journal Science. The study, led by Professor Frank Tanser from the Africa Centre, spanned a seven year period (2004-2011), and followed nearly 17 000 people, the largest ever study of its kind to be completed.

Sudan commits to stepping up its response to HIV

Despite years of conflict and humanitarian emergencies, Sudan is stepping up its response to HIV. Across Sudan there are an estimated 69 000 people living with HIV and HIV prevalence is at 0.4%. Estimates also show that only 10% of the estimated number of people in need of antiretroviral treatment are receiving it.

UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé congratulated the President of Burkina Faso, Blaise Compaoré for his personal engagement in his country’s AIDS response during a meeting held on 20 December in the country’s capital of Ouagadougou. New HIV infections in Burkina Faso have dropped by 60% in the past ten years.
South Africa’s savings in procurement of antiretroviral drugs to increase access to treatment for people living with HIV

Benin’s Head of State calls for shared responsibility in the national AIDS response

At an extraordinary session of Benin’s National AIDS Committee on 23 October, President Boni Yayi called for a series of measures to accelerate progress in the country’s AIDS response. Held at the Palais des Congrès in Cotonou, the session was attended by more than 350 participants, including ministers, ambassadors and representatives from the private sector, civil society, networks of people living with HIV, and United Nations agencies.
Senegal commits to reducing AIDS dependency

Meeting on 15 October with the Prime Minister of Senegal, Mr Abdoul Mbaye, UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé commended the leadership of Senegal for its success in keeping national HIV prevalence low, at approximately 0.7%.
The Dominican Republic to confront its HIV treatment gap
