On 8 June 2010 the UNITAID Board made the final decision to move forward with the new Medicines Patent Pool Foundation and to provide US$ 4.4 million for its first year of operations.

The first-ever Summit of High Level Religious Leaders on the Response to HIV is taking place in The Netherlands from 22 to 23 March. Universal access in the Caribbean must include men who have sex with men

Although the Caribbean as a region has the second highest HIV prevalence after sub-Saharan Africa, most countries have concentrated epidemics which disproportionately affect certain groups including gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM). In many countries men who have sex with men experience considerable social stigma and are not reached with vital HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services. Not only are men afraid of disclosing their sexual activity, they are also deterred from finding out what they need to know to reduce their risk or to buy condoms.

Call for urgent action to improve coverage of HIV services for injecting drug users

The fifty-third session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND)—the central policy-making body of the United Nations in drug related matters—is running in Vienna until 12 March 2010. A new report by the Reference Group to the UN system on HIV and Injecting Drug Use shows that the coverage of effective interventions remains far short of what is needed.

Political commitment at the highest level is recognized as a critical factor in Cambodia’s success in creating a supportive legislative and policy environment for the national response to HIV. With support from the National AIDS Authority, the UNDP Legislature Assistance Project of the National Assembly, , Family Health International USAID funded Prasit Project and UNAIDS, a Parliamentary Handbook on HIV has been developed.

Nigeria to accelerate universal access efforts in HIV response

There are nearly three million people living with HIV in Nigeria. After South Africa, the country has the largest number of people living with HIV in the continent. Each day there are about 1000 new infections. National HIV prevalence is around 4.6%. But these figures mask the multiple epidemics in the various states of the country. Many of the people living with HIV are poor. Add to this stigma and discrimination.

UNAIDS Executive Director visit to China opens with focus on civil society

UNAIDS Executive Secretary Michel Sidibé arrived in Shanghai this week on the first leg of a two-city visit to China. During the visit, Michel Sidibé will visit Shanghai and Beijing, launch the 2009 AIDS Epidemic Update and meet with many key partners from Chinese government and civil society. Michel Sidibé began his visit by attending a prize giving ceremony organised by the China office of the International Treatment Preparedness Coalition, an organization that works to improve treatment conditions for people living with HIV at the local, regional and international levels.
Antiretroviral treatment for prevention

Research suggests that people living with HIV who are following an effective antiretroviral therapy regimen can achieve undetectable viral load, leading to significantly reduced risk of transmitting HIV. However, antiretroviral therapy for prevention has not proven to completely eliminate the risk of transmission the virus. To explore the issue WHO convened a meeting to review scientific data available on this approach.

UNAIDS Head visits oldest HIV treatment centre in Karnataka

Concluding his official visit to India, UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé yesterday visited the HIV treatment centre at Bowring & Lady Curzon Hospitals in Bangalore. The government run centre is the largest and oldest in Karnataka and has the highest rate of integrated HIV and TB services in India. The treatment centre is also one of the few sites able to both evaluate, with a viral load test, when first line treatment is failing, and provide access and establish people on second line treatment.

More than 4 million people in low- and middle-income countries were receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) at the close of 2008, representing a 36% increase in one year and a ten-fold increase over five years, according to a new report released today by the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).
