UNAIDS reaffirms its partnership with Global Fund as board meeting concludes

The 19th Board Meeting of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund) concluded yesterday in Geneva, Switzerland. Opening a technical session on “The Global Fund's role as a strategic and responsible investor in HIV/AIDS” earlier, UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé reaffirmed UNAIDS commitment to its partnership and reiterated his call for a fully funded Global Fund. He called for bolder action in order to address the challenges facing the AIDS response.

Funding for AIDS drugs in jeopardy as global financial crisis hits health sector

A new report from the World Bank reports preliminary findings from a survey in 69 countries conducted by the World Bank, UNAIDS and the World Health Organization showing that respondents in 22 countries in Africa, the Caribbean, Europe and Central Asia, and Asia and Pacific expect the economic crisis to impact HIV treatment programmes over the coming year.

Broad coalition discuss philanthropy and global public health at UN

New report calls for $25 billion investment to ensure countries reach 2010 targets

A new report released by UNAIDS, <> estimates that an investment of US$ 25 billion will be required for the global AIDS response in 2010 for low- and middle-income countries—US$ 11.3 billion more than is available today.

The priority of investment in health is crucial for African countries’ successful development stressed Dr Michel Kazatchkine, executive director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. Dr Kazatchkine was speaking at the 15th International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA) where he highlighted the need for a long-term approach to the reinforcement of health systems in sub-Saharan Africa. Only this will mean a sustainable response to the AIDS epidemic.

Philanthropies major contributors to AIDS

Total AIDS-related philanthropy in 2007 has risen to US $555 million among U.S.-based philanthropies and to EUR114 million (US $168 million) among Europe-based philanthropies, according to new reports from Funders Concerned About AIDS and the European HIV/AIDS Funders Group, released in New York.
