- At the invitation of the Thai Government, UNAIDS Executive Director Mr Michel Sidibé was in Thailand this week to discuss progress in the response to AIDS and visit projects to get a better understanding of how HIV prevention and treatment efforts are making a difference to peoples lives.

- The heads of seven African states were in Yaoundé at the invitation of Cameroon’s President Paul Biya to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their countries’ independence on Thursday. The seven leaders also took part in the closing ceremony of the international conference “Africa 21” on Wednesday evening.
- First joint mission by UNDP and UNAIDS to Mali
- The Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Helen Clark and Executive Director of UNAIDS Michel Sidibé are on a four day mission to Mali. It is the first joint mission to Mali by these two UN agencies. During the mission, Ms Clark will call for an accelerated national AIDS response in the lead-up to 2015, the target date set for reaching the Millennium Development Goals.

- During his visit to the People’s Republic of China, UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé addressed the opening of the Fifth Conference for the International Cooperation Programme on AIDS in Shanghai. Mr Sidibé congratulated the country, saying, “China’s progress can invigorate an AIDS response that teaches and inspires the world.”
- Launch of the Univesal Access progress Report
- Access to antiretroviral therapy continues to expand at a rapid rate. Of the estimated 9.5 million people in need of treatment in 2008 in low- and middle-income countries, 42% had access, up from 33% in 2007. The greatest progress was seen in sub-Saharan Africa, where two-thirds of all HIV infections occur.
- UNAIDS Executive Director visits Lebanon
- UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé concluded an official visit to Lebanon on 29 September. Mr Sidibé recognized and supported the country’s achievements in the HIV response and welcomed the Government of Lebanon’s strong commitment to introduce oral substitution therapy into the country’s public health system.

- The High-Level Forum on Advancing Global Health in the Face of Crisis took place at United Nations Headquarters on Monday, 15 June 2009. The Secretary-General hosted a day long forum in order to elevate the global health debate and engage multisectoral representatives from around the world.

- On 7 July the Universal Postal Union and UNAIDS together with the International Labour Organization and UNI Global launched a global prevention awareness campaign at a press conference held in Palais des Nation, Geneva, Switzerland.

- During an official visit to Bucharest, UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé met with Mr Ion Bazac, Minister of Health of Romania on 12 May 2009. The Executive Director praised Romania’s significant achievement of universal access to HIV treatment for all people living with HIV in need of it.

- Michel Sidibé was sworn in as new Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at UN Headquarters in New York yesterday. Mr Sidibé took up his post as head of UNAIDS and Under Secretary-General of the United Nations on 1 January.
