- Cest un moment passionnant pour me retrouver parmi tous ces chercheurs travaillant sur le vaccin contre le sida, un moment encore plus passionnant que je ne laurais imaginé lorsque jai accepté votre invitation il y a de cela plusieurs mois. Nous vivons en effet une période importante en ce qui concerne le sida, avec lannonce des résultats de lessai de phase III mené en Thaïlande sur un ensemble de candidats vaccins contre le VIH. Comme vous le savez, les résultats de lessai thaïlandais présentés à ce jour sont modestes. Sattarder sur le fait que les résultats ne sont pas pleinement concluants reviendrait à manquer le point important qui est le suivant: ces résultats apportent à la communauté scientifique lespoir dont elle avait bien besoin.

- My friends, who could fail to care about the human consequences of HIV? The most recent data published with our Cosponsors makes for somber reading. Despite tremendous progress with treatment access, we are not there yet. For every person newly on treatment, three more people are newly infected with HIV.The Church’s uncompromising position on the need for social justice—to do what is right— and on the inherent dignity of individuals, inspires us to champion for universal access to comprehensive HIV prevention, treatment, care and support as a moral imperative.

- I want to thank the organizers and particularly Latida Smith for the invitation to spend some time with you today. I'd like to make sure you know the UNAIDS Washington team, Pauline Muchina, Greg Smiley and John Hassell—who I want to thank for connecting us. - When we explore the causes of Africa’s under-economic development, it is common to mention slave trade, colonialism, difficulty in accessing sea trade or inefficient institutions. However, experts in health and economics increasingly agree that it is infectious diseases that play the largest role in Africa’s underdevelopment.

- Let me say from the outset of my opening remarks that if our hope is to put AIDS into the history books—we must take bolder action. Most important is preventing new infections. As long as there are five people newly infected for every two people starting HIV treatment—we will not change the trajectory of the epidemic.
