Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was presented with the UNAIDS leadership award by Mr Michel Sidibé, UNAIDS Executive Director on World AIDS Day, 1 December 2010. Brasilia, Brazil.
The major event was the Open Dialogue Consultation with Mass Media Decision Makers and Leading HIV Experts in the Moscow House of Journalists. There were chief editors of more than 20 Russia's regions. The conference was attended by Vladimir Pozner (right), TV journalist and member of the Global Prevention HIV Commission as well as Dr.Denis Broun (centre), UNAIDS Regional Director of Europe and Central Asia
A Red Ribbon event was organized in Moscow. The event consisted of distributing red ribbons and information leaflets by students and volunteers across the city despite the cold weather (-24C) at universities and schools.
The Red Ribbon was put at the UN House gates for the first ever time.
Staff members from the International Labour Organization (ILO) formed the traditional ILO human red ribbon which was illuminated as part of the Light for Rights global campaign.
To mark 1 December in Brazil, UNAIDS partnered with the Brazilian Association of Municipalities (ABM) to place a red ribbon on important landmarks in as many cities and towns as possible. At the Viet Nam National Congress to review 20 years of HIV response in the country, the Viet Nam government granted the ‘Friendship Order’ to the Joint UN team in Viet Nam to acknowledge the significant contribution to the national HIV response. World AIDS Day activities in Thailand began on 28 November with an all-day rally and exhibition event held at popular city centre park, coordinated by the Thailand Business Coalition on AIDS and the Ministry of Public Health and UNAIDS. The event was attended by the Minister of Public Health, Mr. Jurin Laksanawisit and concluded with a "Lights for Rights" on-stage activity in Jatujak park in support of the global 100 cities World AIDS Day Lights for Rights commemoration.
