- This PCB could not be more timely. We have less than 1000 days to report on our progress to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. Today it is important for us to take the time to reflect and shape our future — to look at what could be the way forward, not just for the global AIDS response, but more generally for global health and development.

- To help measure progress on gender equality and HIV, a global indicator on “prevalence of recent intimate partner violence” has been added to the core indicators for country reporting on the progress in the AIDS response, with 52 countries having reported on the indicator. The UNAIDS family would like to reiterate its readiness to work with all partners to eliminate violence against women and girls and work towards the vision of Zero new HIV infections, Zero AIDS-related deaths, and Zero discrimination.

- It was people living with HIV, those affected, who turned everything around in this epidemic. They made the response to HIV and AIDS a responsibility for us all. They challenged us to recognize them as people with a human right to live in health – not as victims or criminals. Over the years, they have inspired and driven progress in the AIDS response. They have been true human rights defenders - fighting for their lives and for the lives of millions of others.

- UNAIDS would like to call on all stakeholders to further strengthen efforts to eliminate all forms of HIV-related stigma and discrimination, and promote and protect human rights of all people living with, affected by or at risk of HIV. This is critical not only to ensure an effective response to the AIDS epidemic, but also to achieve sustainable development that is human-centered and promotes social integration and inclusion. UNAIDS will continue to work with all partners towards the achievement of these goals.
