Amr Waked, UNAIDS Regional Goodwill Ambassador for the Middle East and North Africa

Egyptian Actor Amr Waked has served as UNAIDS Regional Goodwill Ambassador for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) since July 2010. In his role as UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador, Mr Waked seeks to counter stigma and discrimination and advocate for the rights of people living with HIV and young people especially those most at risk.

Speaking publically about the key issues affecting people living with HIV and driving the epidemic, he is committed to support the response in this region by normalizing discussion around HIV.

Mr Waked participates in UNAIDS regional events and media encounters calling on governments, donors, civil society and key actors in MENA countries to renew their commitment to the AIDS response and focus the response on preventing new infections while providing the needed services for those who are living with HIV.

He also encourages the media to reach out to the public with accurate, nonstigmatizing information on HIV and help to give a voice to all individuals affected by the disease.

Prior to UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador, Mr Waked took part in the Unite for Children against AIDS campaign with UNICEF in Egypt and participated in World AIDS Day activities. He has contributed to the production of two docudramas on HIV, participated in UNICEF SOTNA (our voice) programme with young people, and mainstreamed HIV and Hepatitis C messages into TV series Lahazat Harega (Emergency situations).
