Efficient and Sustainable HIV Responses: Case studies on country progress

As the world economic landscape changes, so too does the HIV funding landscape. The limited resources available require more emphasis on value for money. This case study report consists of eight case studies. It highlights countries’ progress in making their HIV response more efficient or increasing domestic HIV funding, contributing to sustainability, increased scale-up and country ownership. Cambodia and Myanmar have re-allocated resources towards high-impact interventions. South Africa and Swaziland have saved millions by improving their antiretroviral drug tenders. Kenya, Namibia, Malawi and Kazakhstan have taken active steps for a future with fewer external funds. Each country has evolved strategies that other countries may apply to their particular context. The examples given here aim to catalyse country-driven action to make efficiency and sustainably funded HIV services the reality in the HIV response.

World leaders embrace the African Union Roadmap on AIDS, TB and malaria: Establishing Shared Responsibility and Global Solidarity as a vision for global health in the Post-2015 development agenda

On 26 September, 2012, on the side-lines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, political leaders from Africa and its development partners came together with representatives from civil society, academia and development institutions to re-affirm commitments and to take action to accelerate progress in the AIDS response through a new, unifying agenda of shared responsibility and global solidarity.

Women out loud: How women living with HIV will help the world end AIDS

This is especially evident when it comes to HIV. Half of all people living with HIV are women, yet many are underserved or do not know their status. Despite the many successes we have seen, women still face inequalities that will keep the AIDS response from reaching its full potential.

Decision Point La Francophonie: No New HIV Infections, No One Denied Treatment - La Francophonie Summit, Kinshasa, October 2012

In June 2011, world leaders unanimously adopted the UN General Assembly Political Declaration on AIDS that laid out ambitious targets for the global HIV response. They pledged, among other goals, to reduce the sexual transmission of HIV by 50%, end new HIV infections among children and ensure 15 million people have access to HIV treatment by 2015. While the International Organisation of La Francophonie (IOF) has made considerable progress towards these targets, its member countries are characterized by marked variations in access to treatment and prevention services as well as inadequate funding from both international and domestic sources.

Securing an AIDS Free Future: Practical Lessons about Security and AIDS in Conflict and Post-Conflict Settings

Drawing on experiences from UN peacekeeping operations over the last 12 years, the report underscores the security dimensions of the AIDS response, summarizes both successes and challenges to date in integrating HIV in peacekeeping missions, and identifies key priorities for future efforts to mainstream HIV across all aspects of peacekeeping operations.
