It is an honour and a pleasure to be here today, at the 14th Polish AIDS Conference. It is wonderful to once again be in Poland most especially at this important occasion and to see the extraordinary level of interest in AIDS.

My name is Peter Piot and I am executive director of UNAIDS. Thank you for inviting me to testify today before the Senate Health, Labor and Pensions Committee about the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the work of UNAIDS to address this epidemic, and the critical difference that PEPFAR has made in the global fight against HIV/AIDS.

Speech by UNAIDS Executive Director Dr Peter Piot to Global Forum on Human Resources for Health, Kampala, Uganda 5 March, 2008.

I am grateful for this opportunity to help launch this comprehensive report. As Secretary-General and as an Asian, I am particularly moved to have this chance to contribute to a full and honest discussion about the epidemic in Asia -- a discussion which has not always been forthright or open enough in the past.

It is a very great honor to be in this distinguished panel today on the topic of alliances to address the feminization of the epidemic. Thank you my co-speakers and colleagues for your leadership.

I also welcome this opportunity to resume an important dialogue. Finance and planning ministers have a crucial role to play in responding to AIDS – as vital, in different ways – as that of health ministers.

It is a great pleasure and privilege to be here in the Dominican Republic with you at this unique meeting of the Coalition of Latin American First Ladies and Women Leaders on Women and AIDS.
