Seven years ago, many of us met here in Durban at the 2000 International AIDS Conference. That conference marked a watershed in the global response to the epidemic because, for the first time, it was possible to discuss developing country access to anti-retroviral treatment and a global movement was initiated.

It is an honour to be here with you in Kigali today, and to have this opportunity to speak on behalf of the World Bank, the World Health Organisation, UNICEF – all the co-sponsors of UNAIDS and of this meeting.

8th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific Opening Ceremony 19 August 2007

Distinguished guests, colleagues and friends, good morning. I thank the local organizing committee of the 8th ICAAP for this opportunity to stand before you once again and to look at how we are progressing after the Kobe ICAAP.Meeting two years after the Kobe Conference presents a good opportunity to take stock of the situation and to look ahead at the enormous challenges we are facing in the region in combating the AIDS epidemic.

Let me start by saying how pleased I am that this is a joint meeting between the ISSTDI and the IUSDI.
