Día Internacional de la Tuberculosis 2011

Mensaje del director ejecutivo del ONUSIDA, Michel Sidibé

Ginebra, 24 de marzo 2011—Me satisface ver cómo la ampliación de la colaboración entre los programas para el VIH y la tuberculosis está dando sus frutos. Desde 2002, el número de pacientes de tuberculosis que se han realizado las pruebas del VIH se ha multiplicado por 80.

Para los pacientes de tuberculosis que descubren que son seropositivos, conocer su estado les permitirá  buscar acceso al tratamiento y a los medicamentos para el VIH que salvarán sus vidas.

Sin embargo, en este Día Mundial de la Tuberculosis, estoy preocupado. Estamos siendo testigos de una epidemia emergente de tuberculosis resistente a los fármacos. Debemos reflexionar sobre el hecho de que, si no se toman medidas urgentes, unos dos millones de personas que viven con el VIH podrían fallecer desde ahora hasta 2015 como consecuencia de la tuberculosis.

Actualmente disponemos de las herramientas necesarias para prevenir muchas de estas muertes: se ha desarrollado una prueba de detección de tuberculosis más rápida y precisa y el acceso a la terapia antirretrovírica ha mejorado significativamente. Las comunidades de la tuberculosis y del VIH deben seguir ampliando sus esfuerzos conjuntos para extender rápidamente estos servicios y salvar así muchas vidas.

No olvidemos que el VIH y la tuberculosis son dos enfermedades, pero estamos hablando de una vida.

El ONUSIDA se ha comprometido a reducir a la mitad las muertes por tuberculosis en personas que viven con el VIH para 2015. Creo que no solo podemos conseguir este objetivo, sino superarlo.

UNAIDS expresses sadness over the death of staff member Sam Were

It is with profound sadness that UNAIDS mourns the death of staff member Mr Sam Were who recently passed away in Kampala, Uganda. Sam lived openly with HIV and served as a role model by declaring his HIV-positive status at a time when few people living with HIV were willing to disclose.

UNAIDS acknowledges the health and human rights legacy of Jonathan Mann on the tenth anniversary of his death

UNAIDS today acknowledges the life and legacy of Dr Jonathan Mann, a formative force in the fields of HIV, health and human rights. Dr Mann and his wife, AIDS researcher Mary-Lou Clements-Mann were on their way to Geneva when their plane crashed off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada on 2 September 1998.

UNAIDS mourns the death of prominent AIDS activist Wellington Solomon Adderly

It is with profound sadness that UNAIDS mourns the death of AIDS activist Wellington Solomon Adderly who was killed at his home in Nassau, Bahamas earlier this week. Mr Adderly was one of the leading figures in the response to HIV in the Bahamas having served for many years as President of the Bahamas National Network of Positive Living. He was also a prominent member of the Bahamas Resource Committee and Administrator of the Bahamas AIDS Foundation.
