World Summit New York, September 2005

In New York from 12-16 September, UNAIDS Executive Director Dr Peter Piot participated in the 2005 World Summit, as well as in advance events.

On 16 September, Dr Piot spoke at the launch of the "Treat every child as your own" campaign by the Organization of African First Ladies against HIV/AIDS (OAFLA), where an agreement to strengthen collaboration on the campaign's implementation was signed by UNAIDS, UNICEF and the OAFLA.

On 15 September, at a briefing on women, AIDS and girls' education for First Spouses attending the 2005 World Summit, Dr Piot launched "Educate girls, fight AIDS", a new issues brief from the UNAIDS-led Global Coalition on Women and AIDS.

On 13 September, Dr Piot addressed leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. He also spoke at an informal breakfast, hosted by UNDP, entitled "Responding to the Challenges of the Millennium Declaration and the AIDS Epidemic: UNAIDS and UN Reform".

On 12 September, Dr Piot spoke at an informal lunch organized by UNAIDS together with UNDP and the International Parliamentary Union (IPU). Entitled "National Policy and the AIDS Response – the Role of Parliamentarians", the event focused on exploring how parliamentarians can become more fully engaged in the response to AIDS.

"Treat every child as your own" campaign launch, September 2005

The "Treat every child as your own" campaign was launched by the Organization of African First Ladies against HIV/AIDS on 15 September, during the 2005 World Summit.

The campaign aims to prevent new infections among young people, and particularly to protect children affected by the disease from stigma.

At the event, UNAIDS Executive Director Dr Peter Piot and Ann M. Veneman, Executive Director of UNICEF, together with Mrs Jeannette Kagame, First Lady of the Republic of Rwanda and President of the Organization of African First Ladies against HIV/AIDS, signed an agreement to strengthen collaboration and to provide technical guidance and assistance with resource mobilization as well as monitoring and evaluation of the campaign's impact.

Women and AIDS and girls' education briefing, September 2005

At an informal briefing on women and AIDS and girls' education for spouses of heads of state attending the 2005 World Summit, the Executive Director of UNAIDS launched "Educate girls, fight AIDS", a new issues brief produced by the UNAIDS-led Global Coalition on Women and AIDS.

3rd IAS conference on HIV Pathogenesis and Treatment, July 2005

In Brazil from 25-28 July, UNAIDS Executive Director Dr Peter Piot attended the 3rd IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis and Treatment, held in Rio de Janeiro, where he was invited to deliver the Special Lecture at the conference closing on 27 July. Dr Piot also met with Brazilian government officials, including the newly appointed Minister of Health Saraiva Felipe, and visited community-based projects.

Official visit to Beijing, China, June 2005

Official visit to Yunnan, China, June 2005

Dr Peter Piot, the Executive Director of UNAIDS, travelled with US Global AIDS Coordinator Ambassador Randall Tobias on a joint three-day mission to the southwestern province of Yunnan in China from 8-10 June. View photos.

Following the Yunnan mission, Dr Piot visited the Chinese capital of Beijing, from 12-16 June, where he met with Premier Web Jiabao and other leaders. He also addressed students and faculty at the Health Science Center of Beijing University and at China's Central Party School. View photos.
