This report offers a summary of the issues and challenges that emerged from the discussions during the meeting.

Experiences of HIV/AIDS prevention and control in Phayao province are good examples of the rethinking of health-care management. Progress in battling with HIV/AIDS in Phayao had provided a good lesson: people, not institutions, are the ultimate contributing factor to the progress attained. Government and non-governmental organizations will be important, when they can facilitate and not constrain people in responding to HIV and AIDS.

Preventive therapy against tuberculosis.

This paper introduces the conceptual framework of interrelated consequences of the economic crisis on HIV/AIDS prevention and control. On the basis of document research and in-depth interviews with officials at national and provincial levels, we explain how the Government of Thailand has dealt with the AIDS epidemic
during the period of economic hardship.

The present Guidelines are intended to place socioeconomic impact studies in the planning process in a systematic way.

The specific aim of these Guidelines is to encourage and enable managers of HIV prevention projects and programmes to conduct cost analysis. These Guidelines relate the costing methodology presented in the PHC Manual and adapted to HIV prevention activities.

The report is based on the work of Gladys Mutangadura, Duduzile Mukurazita and Helen Jackson who compiled and analysed the review on rural household and community responses to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

As a resource for the delegates at this African Development Forum 2000 devoted to the topic of HIV/AIDS, UNAIDS is pleased to provide the following country profiles. Together, the profiles help to paint a picture of the current state of the HIV epidemic in Africa, its impact on the social and economic fabric, and the response thus far of the African nations to the unprecedented crisis caused by HIV/AIDS. For the selected indicators used, they are as complete a compilation as possible, given the available data from the African countries and from UNAIDS and WHO sources.
