Mission to India

UNAIDS Executive Director Dr Peter Piot ended a weeklong country mission to India, where he participated in several events involving civil society groups, the business sector, government and people living with HIV and AIDS. Dr Piot addressed the first-ever National Student and Youth Parliament Special Session on HIV/AIDS, held in New Delhi on 6-7 November. More than 3000 young people from across India came together to deliberate and present to the Government their recommendations on the draft law on HIV/AIDS. The event was inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.

Stand up. Speak out. Stop bullying!

In the week leading up to the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia, a team of volunteers led by representatives of UNAIDS, UNESCO, Youth Voices Count, Youth LEAD and APCOM, chalked rainbows across school yards around Bangkok, Thailand. Called #schoolrainbow, the initiative aimed to bring awareness about the problem of bullying, particularly towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex students, at schools in Thailand and around the world. Such bullying can lead to a higher risk of illegal drug use, unprotected sex, HIV, self-harm and suicide. Download the full analysis

ICAAP11 highlights need for innovation, investment and focus in Asia and the Pacific

Nearly 4000 delegates from more than 80 countries gathered in Bangkok, Thailand, for the 11th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP11). The Congress opened officially on 19 November 2013. Building on UNAIDS vision of zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths, the theme for this year’s ICAAP is Triple Zero – Investing in Innovation.
