This is my first visit to Uganda, and it is a real honour to sit on the panel with Dr Kihumuro Apuuli of the Uganda AIDS Commission, and with Johnah Josiah of Kenya and Mobafa Baker of Trinidad.

First, let me express my appreciation to the Senate of the Philippines and to the Inter-Parliamentary Union who have made this meeting a reality. It is the first time ever that Parliamentarians from all over the world have come together to discuss the challenges of HIV.

This session will discuss family-oriented prevention strategies, which ought to be designed and implemented with an active participation of all family members, as well as work on improving the accessibility of already existing HIV/AIDS prevention and care services.

It is an honour and a pleasure to be here today, at the 14th Polish AIDS Conference. It is wonderful to once again be in Poland most especially at this important occasion and to see the extraordinary level of interest in AIDS.

My name is Peter Piot and I am executive director of UNAIDS. Thank you for inviting me to testify today before the Senate Health, Labor and Pensions Committee about the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the work of UNAIDS to address this epidemic, and the critical difference that PEPFAR has made in the global fight against HIV/AIDS.
